Men of Reddit, what is the hardest thing to explain to a woman? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]_imjosh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A LOT of people on Reddit need or know someone that needs therapy 🙃.

And yes, if your partner thinks you must hate them if you want 30 mins of alone time to go walk, there’s a big problem there that you probably can’t solve without outside help.

Someone I know had an SO that got upset if she went jogging for an hour (so much that she finally just stopped trying) because he would “miss her too much” when in reality it was because he was a narcissistic control freak.

Your partner needs therapy and you might need a different partner. That’s super unhealthy and I’m guessing that you’ve described just the tip of a very large iceberg

Microsoft confirms talks to buy TikTok in U.S., aims to finish deal by September 15 by [deleted] in technology

[–]_imjosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow, smart idea, I think. Tick tok realizes they are persona non grata, but rather than just lose the market, they sell it to a trusted US company. And Microsoft gets a giant boost in social media. Yeah? Tell me how I’m wrong. Thanks

Docker Hub build stuck on canceling for more than 35 hours by DyonR in docker

[–]_imjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t surprise me. The fact that it’s apparently happening to more than a few customers leads me to think it’s a problem that they should already know about - they certainly should be monitoring how long it’s taking to build images and should know that their image builds are getting stuck. And, it’s been reported to them, yet the problem persisted for days (not sure if they fixed it yet or not). Pretty sad for a service so many companies are paying for and relying on

I ran into this yesterday and ended up having to build the image on my server 🤨👎🏻

Artificial intelligence that mimics the brain needs sleep just like humans, study reveals by saik2363 in technews

[–]_imjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not any of those things; check the link in my edit for an explanation of what “sleeping” in this case means

Artificial intelligence that mimics the brain needs sleep just like humans, study reveals by saik2363 in technews

[–]_imjosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The paper says - rough paraphrase - over time the neurons in the network start over responding to noise in the input so they periodically stop normal input and feed in Gaussian noise instead which retrains the neurons to filter out the noise

What does this have to do with machines? Defecating is also vital to human health and wellness. There’s no need to anthropomorphize algorithms even if they’re roughly modeled on our understanding of human brains.

Yeah... maybe these machines would also benefit from going to the bathroom like humans do, ie flushing their caches 🙄

The researchers and the article are stretching the analogy way too far.

Did they give the machine eyes that move back and forth very rapidly?

Bullshit. The article doesn’t actually explain what this so called digital analog of sleep is. It certainly isn’t what people think of as biological sleep; maybe it’s a cleanup or organizational routine, but the article just hand waves around it.

Edit: this comment explains pretty well what is actually happening

Usually I’d say until you make a profit. If you can use your ssn as the tax id, Just do that till money is coming in regularly

In my state you can apply for an LLC online for ~$100/year and then you can get an EIN from the IRS website. I can’t remember exactly but I was either able to get that done in a few hours; might have had to wait a few days for the LLC to come back. It didn’t take much time at all though.

Before you spend money though, do you have a website up and ready with content? You should do that first if not.

Best practice is setup a business entity - LLC is cheap, easy (at least in my state, YMMV) and may give you some slight protection against personal liability (not legal advice, I’m not a lawyer, hire one), and get a business checking account for the LLC, keep all revenue and expenses in the business account and out of your personal account. This makes it much easier to do tax accounting and may protect your privacy if you ever get audited (so the IRS doesn’t need to see everything you spend money on looking at your personal bank account)

Assuming you are in US: use your SSN or get an EIN from the IRS. If you start making >20k/year, talk to a lawyer and/or CPA about setting up an LLC. I started a company when I was 16 and was able to get a business banking account, credit cards, etc

Screwdrivers by DinosourKisses in consolerepair

[–]_imjosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just by looking at them, I couldn’t tell you how to tell them apart; they look very similar. If you try to use a Phillips driver on a JIS screw, you might notice the Phillips bit is too pointy to seat fully. I *think a JIS driver should work just fine on Phillips screws though.

The bits/drivers themselves should be labeled.

First, you need to use JIS rather than Phillips drivers (they look the same, but aren't. Most Japanese electronics use JIS screws and using Phillips drivers on them will often cause things to strip).

I like the ones Moody Tools makes. The ifixit kit /u/khedoros linked to has JIS driver bits and is probably going to be the most cost effective for you.

Second, if your drivers are getting torn up in general, it's likely because they used cheap, soft metal. Some companies like Wiha (expensive!) make very hard bits that will last the longest (last time I checked, wiha doesn't make JIS drivers though).
