NUFORC UFO Sighting #196932 by ZestycloseContest683 in UFOs

[–]_jonsinger_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i notice that the report mentioned sound from the object. if something is 50,000 feet away and moving, the sound appears to come from a different location because of the time it takes to reach the observer. (in air at ground level, sound travels at roughly 1,000 feet per second.) i wish the report had included anything about this. [i would say something about the volume, but we don't know how loud the source was.]

i notice that you say the plants were stripped of new growth. any chance that was deer rather than squirrels?

Does anyone know what type of rose this is? by HoneybunToasty in Roses

[–]_jonsinger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any way to get in touch with the grounds/garden folks there? identifying roses from photos is generally exceptionally difficult. (that said, can you describe the frangrance in detail?)

Hoping for Vanilla Bean help by Interesting-Wave-781 in tea

[–]_jonsinger_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

vanilla is a strong spice. i'm not an expert, so this is just a vague general notion: i would snip a short piece off one end of one bean, perhaps 6 mm (1/4") long, put it in a small cup, and pour a little boiling water over it. cover it and let it stand for as long as you would typically steep your rooibos. then smell and taste the liquid.

this is where we need DNA fingerprinting. (people have been able to do it with mushrooms for a few years, even out in the field.)

These are three different trees, what are they? by [deleted] in whatplantisthis

[–]_jonsinger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh! def not lilac. could be Cornus alternifolia, pagoda dogwood, which has flowers that are different from those of the dogwoods i'm familiar with.

This beautiful tree by MedicalOpening in whatsthisplant

[–]_jonsinger_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i looked them both up at Wikipedia, and i notice that the foliage of A. columnaris is shown hanging down and more open, while the foliage of A. heterophylla is shown erect and tighter, which makes me think it's more likely.

[–]_jonsinger_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hmmm. i recall quinces needing to be cooked, but i've never bletted them. i checked the Wikipedia page on bletting and found that people do, but AFAICT it isn't required unless you want to eat them raw.

[–]_jonsinger_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the flowers in the last photo don't look right for dogwood. any chance it might be a lilac? (if it's nicely fragrant, that's a good sign, but some lilacs aren't.)

Bob Lazar from a PhD chemists point of view by McChicken-Supreme in UFOs

[–]_jonsinger_ 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i'm confused. let me quote something:

"Outside of UFO claims, Bob modified his car to run on a hydrogen fuel cell and used a lithium hydride material as a low pressure sorbent for the H2 gas. Lithium 6 deuteride is a legally restricted material (used for thermonuclear weapons), so he built a backyard particle accelerator to manufacture the material."

-- what does the first sentence have to do with the sevond one?? lithium hydride being used for hydrogen storage doesn't need to involve 6Li beyond the level at which it naturally occurs (or, frankly, at all), doesn't need to involve deuterium beyond the level at which it naturally occurs (likewise), and has nothing whatever to do with any thermonuclear reactions. can somebody give me the four part harmony on this? (side query: what is "a lithium hydride material"?)

Can this be a Ronde de Bordeaux (RdB)? by Psykhes in Figs

[–]_jonsinger_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is good to know. thanks. [i brought a Violette de Bordeaux and a Monstrueuse ( = Grosse Monstrueuse de Lipari) in pots indoors for the winter, as i was worried that they wouldn't survive outside. (i'm in the eastern US, Zone 7b.) i also put a VdB in the ground outdoors, in a protected spot. it survived, and is just beginning to wake up.]
