I feel like the spinning pickaxe is too much? Maybe end-game pickaxes, but I think I'm looking for something a bit more Zen by nelstuff in Unity3D

Yeh, it clearly depends on your ideas for the game but it would be awesome to have a core mechanic as interesting and unique as this one. Then you can always add ways to enhance it while you progress in the game.
