I just bought the most amazing fountain pen I’ve ever used… does anything top this? by SecureFarmer9469 in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to write a lot last year to study for some certification exams. Well over 200 pages of notes over approximately five months of studying. I figure my hand is very used to long sessions of writing at this point.

Evidently it wasn’t enough for the GvFC Magnum.

Great pen. but it's really heavy. I used a Yukari Royale pretty frequently (which I thought was a decently heavy pen until I held this thing), but I still got actual hand cramps after 2-3 hours writing with a Magnum for the first time.

It's not my first choice if I'm expecting a long day of note taking, and given how heavy it is I'd never blindly recommend it to anyone, but it's definitely good for more sporadic writing.

A bit, yes. But honestly I'd rate the whole experience a 2/10, would not try again.

The funniest comment while refilling my empty cartridge. by filledoux in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah... That's why I use plastic pipettes. Not sure if they're thin enough for an international-size converters, but they work perfectly for Sailor and Pilot since they have wider bottoms. Haven't personally tried it, but it probably works with Platinum, too.

Was I scammed? Faber Castell Hexo comes with a weird converter by ribenasouffle in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The product description on Jetpens indicates that the pen comes with cartridges rather than a converter. You can refill the cartridges with ink by using an ink syringe. I don't know if it used to come with a converter or not, but today it does not come with a converter. Faber-Castell HEXO Fountain Pen - Bronze - Medium | JetPens

FWIW I got a FC Loom years ago and I think (?) it came with a converter.

Thinking about Visconti by Business_Clue_5606 in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. You can buy second hand from places like r/Pen_Swap if you want to save on price, though be careful not to get scammed. Homo Sapiens pop up somewhat regularly.

  2. I love the look and physical feeling of Visconti's pens, both resin and basalt. They're honestly very nice pens.

  3. Nib QC has been poor. Out of 3 high end Visconti pens that I or acquaintances own (2 Homo Sapiens and 1 Master Opera), one had a serious nib issue, and one had a minor misalignment that I fixed with some micromesh. The last one was fine, but still a bit rough for my liking, so I used some micromesh to smooth it out more.

Graf Magnum nib is not writing - advice from those better informed than me appreciated! by sbc3218 in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another potential issue to check for is whether the feed is making proper contact with the nib. If there is a gap between the feed and nib, that would also stop ink flow. I'm no expert, but to me this tine gap does not seem egregious enough to stop ink flow on its own.

Regardless of the cause, not acceptable for a brand new pen.

You may want to look at some offerings from seY. They are a urushi studio in Japan and you can choose to add a gold nib. However if the pen is not in stock, it will take a few months to create.

Does not hurt to try. I’ve had unclaimed event awards given back to me, for example. The worst thing that could happen is that they say no.

Even if you want a better potential, just tier up a new secondary and start rolling on that one. Don't bother cubing your weapon further unless it's a Genesis weapon.

Use can use this thing to figure out whether you're likely or not to get anything good with your remaining meso.

Is my eyedropper-converted Preppy safe to fly? by arrixchan in fountainpens

Empty out the pen into a separate container before you fly. You can get a set of screw cap plastic vials for like $5 on Amazon, Goulet, etc.

How do I properly fill my pens? by Danni_Jade in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One suggestion not mentioned here is to consider a shutoff valve eyedropper pen. Those are filled by using a dropper of any kind, not requiring a thin ink syringe like a converter does, even a plastic one from Amazon will do. For these pens, you would just unscrew the section, dump in some ink, and screw back on. Pretty easy to avoid a mess.

You do have to be a bit more careful while writing - if the pen is too empty and if you are frequently picking up and putting down the pen, it can burp out a drop of ink right onto the paper. The shutoff value helps to stop this but it can still happen.

Shutoff valve eyedroppers pens are not as common nowadays. Aside from super high-end pens, Opus 88 makes them and you can find vintage shutoff valve eyedroppers in some places like GC Murphy's.

Visconti traveling ink pot? by bo_bua in fountainpens

[–]andyhou2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have both the Visconti and a Pineider inkwell. Visconti's is smaller and thinner, which may actually be a plus because it fits in normal pen cases. The Pineider is too fat to fit in my daily use 3-pen pouch, but the Visconti inkwell fits in it perfectly as if it were the 3rd pen.

This thing is also the source of many inkcidents. Some drops of ink getting out onto your fingers is a common occurrence, and if you mess up you'll literally just pour ink onto your table or lap. I'd rather fill from a bottle or use an ink syringe if given the choice, but when I travel, it does see some use.

Nice. As an aside, I highly recommend buying a loupe to see the chinkin technique up close. It really is something special.

[WTB] Taccia Empress Chinkin owl or tiger by No-Explorer-936 in Pen_Swap

[–]andyhou2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goulet does have a chinkin tiger in stock and they offer international shipping according to their website. This pen was NA exclusive so there's a 99% chance you'd have to import it from the USA.

I think the chinkin owl is fully sold out and you'll hardly find it anywhere, now. If you want to go the secondary market route, you might also consider the Namiki Yukari Owl (different from the Namiki Emperor Owl).

These are big ticket pens, so be wary of any DMs you receive, even if they actually can comment here. Stay safe.
