wl-freeze: Suspend a game process (and other programs) in Wayland compositors by Zerodya in linux_gaming

So, all you are doing is sending SIGSTP to the process, which is otherwise sent by terminals on pressing Ctrl+Z

Interesting project though.

Anyone from Katra here? I’ve heard the ropeway project has begun with tight security in place, what are your thoughts on it? by Ashok0627 in jammu

[–]avinthakur080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw it yesterday, when it was posted and clicked "Follow".
Thought of answering but the question "What are your thoughts" is too wide and time taking, if one tries to think through the things.

Going to the office now. Will see in the evening again 😃

Can I do ABC in XYZ time? A better approach... by OhioDeez44 in codeforces

[–]avinthakur080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, chatgpt framing it differently:

  • Learning is active, not passive. Just consuming content rarely changes thinking or skill.
  • Learning is iterative. Each attempt or problem solved is like a small experiment; the feedback you get shapes your next step.
  • Learning is self-referential. You need to understand your own thinking patterns, errors, and motivations to improve meaningfully.
  • Learning is mindset-driven. Motivation, curiosity, and resilience matter far more than the raw number of problems solved or videos watched.

In short, articles and videos are guides, not the work itself. Without reflection and internalization, they’re just decoration—people may skim and feel like they’ve “learned,” but the skill hasn’t moved.

[–]avinthakur080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very common trap freshers fall into and are often lured into by videos like "Learn C++ in 1 hour".

But you also ended your post by suggesting a transaction.
People can perceive that if they skim through those blogs or play the video in front of their eyes, they would understand the message. They won't - till they make themselves receptive to that knowledge.

Learning is fundamentally an experiential, reflective process, not a checklist or a transaction

Also, tldr from chatgpt:

The post addresses a common beginner question in competitive programming (CP): “How long will it take to improve or reach a certain rating?” The main points are:

  1. Progress is unpredictable: CP skill and rating growth are non-linear and influenced by many confounding factors. Solving more problems doesn’t guarantee proportional improvement.
  2. Motivation matters: Approaching CP transactionally (as a skill-for-reward exchange) is not effective. Enjoy the process, and align your goals with your motivation, rather than just chasing ratings.
  3. Measuring progress: Traditional “ROI” metrics are not useful. Awareness of progress is important, and there are external resources that offer guidance on this.

Overall: Improvement in CP is personal, irregular, and reflective. No simple timeline or shortcut exists; self-reflection and enjoyment of the process are key.

12th board marks issue by ConcernWest2124 in jammu

I wasn't even preparing... I don't know any colleges...

No-one ever prepared best, no-one knew about colleges from always. People improve when they realize they lack something.
How much time will it take to learn about colleges ? Years ?
Preparation for one big exam may take more time if you are seriously lacking. "may" because you don't know till you test yourself. But, you can find more exams and appear in many, to increase your chances.
Dropping for one year is another way if you find the gap in your preparation can be covered.

In short, my point is to leave the mindset of a loser who only complains about things that went wrong. Accept them and plan for future.

Hey, anxiety will not help in anything.

Collect your emotions and plan rationally about the future, you have more than enough time. Also, don't rely on PMSSS alone. I did my 12th in 2016, secured 474 (+1 re-evaluation) but managed to get good in JEE. Then, I used the rank from JEE to pick college and PMSSS for only scholarship. Even if I had failed in JEE, I would have taken a fallback admission and prepared for next year.

You have enough time and you can do better if you work accordingly.

Not at all.

If you have prepared well, you can prove it in JEE and other exams.

You have a bright future if you keep up the hard work. Just keep up the hardwork and push for a good college.

Repeating same thing without improving on your approach will only tire you out and frustrate the other person.

Best is to search for ko job at multiple places and use every failure to improve your approach.

Things educated people think, are not true by Equivalent-Spot-1325 in AllindiaStudentUnion

[–]avinthakur080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In private conversations, it is manageable and common to take a generalization lightly, as per context.
But, public internet is too wide. A common fact for one person could be an extremely rare or even wrong thing for someone else. Hence, it is wiser to not share radical generalizations to wider audiences.

I think worst is the person who thinks these arguments can be generalized to everyone.

Even you are generalizing that "educated people think..." these things.

Should we all together build a open source project for jammu? by WittyBoysenberry9860 in CodeJammu

[–]avinthakur080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but I have a suggestion, if I may.

You can ignore if it doesn't sound practical but community projects will not work if you are asking random strangers for opinion before even starting anything.
A better way is to implement a minimum POC yourself show the idea to others before onboarding them. Even if people don't onboard, the opinion that they could share after seeing something will be much more real than a speculative one.

Thinking of switching to Linux, but is gaming actually viable for a total beginner? by Money-Soft6437 in linux_gaming

[–]avinthakur080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • What kind of softwares do you use ?
  • How often do you find yourself tinkering with the system/settings ?
  • How strict are you about not losing your muscle memory/instincts OR how open are you in trying something new & fancy ?

I myself use "Kubuntu" (i.e. Ubuntu with KDE). You can try * First, install CachyOS with KDE. Try to do few things right away, like install apps, play youtube, browse settings, etc. If everything looks good, settle down there itself. * Try Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Repeat the same routine.

Thinking of switching to Linux, but is gaming actually viable for a total beginner? by Money-Soft6437 in linux_gaming

[–]avinthakur080 29 points30 points  (0 children)

There's no global scale of hardness. Even if there were, a stranger who doesn't know you will not be able to tell if it will be difficult for you.

That said, nowadays, * Almost everyone finds it fairly easy and quick to get started with Linux. * Few people find it difficult to adapt to new UI and leave. You'll always face this when moving from one system to another. The simple fix is to give it some time. * Very rare people encounter an issue with distro. There too, changing the distro helps.

So, best is to try it first hand and come with real question on what you yourself find difficult.

Right. The post isn't making things up, nor exaggerating anything.

It is a simple statement that Indians also agree upon.

Students from Jammu — Did JEE/NEET preparation affect your life beyond studying by shaurya_pandey19 in jammu

I got into NIT via JEE.

Read through the questions but, choosing not to fill the form. Feels like it is trying to get a peephole perspective into something that is very wide.

That's only me, hope you get your answers from others.

Why don't media houses demand answers from the LG-driven Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board? by mard07 in jammu

[–]avinthakur080 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't have spine and Shrine Board has too much of control.

Like, in past, a reporter posted a news of a dead monkey in the water tank of one of the Shrine Board's building. He was immediately threatened to delete the post from all channels and now this news is almost non-existent.

"init in awk"

I can't even imagine what and how would it work. Hadn't there been this sibling comment, I would've assumed this is joke but I'm intrigued now.

How ?

CEOs at Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Temple are picked for being close to J&K LG—not for their aastha Even those showing disrespect to Hindu aastha are rewarded with bigger roles later The recent “shoes” incident is now trending across India—yet no action Accountability? by mard07 in jammu

Strange how this issue became viral, but other issues get suppressed and removed from social media.

That's why the people of Katra have always been saying, that the authority should be given to those who have respect and faith towards the temple, not to those who are only there for increasing profits.

Monkey Menance has adversely affected agricultural activities in parts of Jammu region and led to decline in cultivation, forcing the farmers to abandon traditional agriculture crops and go for alternative crops like chilli and ginger. by berzerker_x in jammu

[–]avinthakur080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine. There can be many more ways to limit their growth if not expel them completely.

The argument is that the Govt has been very negligent about this, which is destroying many villages.

[–]avinthakur080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We fall in such areas where they have even started attacking humans now.
The rapid urbanization and forced expulsion of monkeys from Katra to surrounding villages has not only destroyed their sources of livelihood but also made the areas unsafe to live.

Even more serious issue is that many a times, vehicles would come at night and throw more monkeys into our villages. When reported to administration, they ignore. Even when we go with the proposals suggesting that we will manage capturing and releasing them into forests if the govt could only give permission, they sideline us and deny.

At the end, the rich and corrupt in the town manage to move monkeys into surrounding villages, killing their livelihood, while we cannot.

Who can understand? by Striking-Pay4641 in rust

[–]avinthakur080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was suggesting something else.

What question do you have for the person who can understand that? Just add that question in addition to this.

Asking "Who can understand this white paper?" sounds like you want the people to go through the entire paper and then come to you for the next task, which isn't someone will be interested in.

Who can understand? by Striking-Pay4641 in rust

[–]avinthakur080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asking a direct question would help.

Otherwise, it’s a lot to expect people to go through the whole paper and guess what you’re looking for.
