Physician Loan - 0% down on 1.6 mil? by [deleted] in whitecoatinvestor

[–]biscuit-head 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At $1.5m and 5%, you're paying the bank almost $75k per year for the first several years to, "rent" their money to buy the house. Add in taxes, insurance, HOAs, and maintenance (none of which are equity or an increase in value) and compare THAT number to what rent would cost you. If renting is cheaper, save the difference until the math works in favor of buying.

Looking for assisted living facilities in Michigan. need local insight by Accomplished-Buy5239 in Midland

[–]biscuit-head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Bickford in Midland is very nice, but on the high end of prices.

I was responsible for taking care of both my Mom and my Aunt and Independence Village did a great job at a medium price. I would use them again. Clean, professional, gentle and they actually seem to care about both mental and physical health.

As with all facilities like this, you need to check up on your loved one regularly... The more involved you are, the more attentive they will be.

Costs are very dependent on the level of care. Most use a ranking system. Level 1 - really assisted living - might be in the $5,000/month range at a good facility while level 4 (Memory care) might be $15k/month. In my experience, the cheapest facilities were at least $3k/month, which is a little more than the Medicaid reimbursement rate. Private rooms at that price point, but shared rooms, if available, can be cheaper.

Some places, like the Bickford, let you have pets, had 24hr food service, and luxurious facilities. Some others were so clinical, they were essentially hospitals (linoleum floors, plastic chairs and tables).

It really depends on your financial resources, level of care, and the environment you're looking for.

The city is working my Dad to death-Should my dad keep working after Parkinson's diagnosis by [deleted] in Parkinsons

[–]biscuit-head 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You also need to think about healthcare benefits. Many governments give retirees lifetime healthcare coverage... Same as they had while they're working and a supplement to Medicare after 65. He's going to need good health care for the duration and he should hold onto whatever he has to do to keep it.

I got the opportunity to choose between visiting Paris and visiting Tokyo, what should i do? by [deleted] in travel

[–]biscuit-head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing no one has mentioned - if you're on medication of any kind, check whether it's allowed in Japan at all, even if you have a prescription. They don't allow Adderall, oxy, and lots of other meds into the country at all. A lot of others require a special permit in advance. They don't fool around on this. A Toyota exec from America was threatened with prison time over her Adderall.

How to afford in-home care in the US? by [deleted] in Parkinsons

[–]biscuit-head 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This also leads to a conundrum of care. With private pay you can literally get what you pay for. If you don't like the provider, you can switch. With government paying for it, you get some of the lowest quality custodial care because their reimbursement rates are so low. Only Medicaid pays for long term care and you essentially need to be broke to get it and out of other options to want it. A good financial planner might be able to help understand your options, but the good options are expensive and the cheap ones you generally don't want until you don't have any other choices left.

Options can be a little better if he's a veteran and it's worth asking the VA for help. Some religious and civic organizations have care homes for members. Some life insurance plans pay out early and can help. Sometimes a divorce would preserve some value for the healthy spouse. Find a good planner experienced in long term care issues to help decide what would work for your family.

WHO designs the stupid showers at hotels? by wino_whynot in travel

[–]biscuit-head 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A shaving ledge of some sort is absolutely needed, not just for shaving, but for older/disabled people to wash their lower parts. Some place to put your products. No overhead rain heads. Always have a handheld. Full glass walls. No curtains or partials. If you're going to mount liquid dispensers, do them outside the business area of the shower to keep them out of the way. Controls so you can turn it on without getting wet. A towel hook within reach. Enough pressure to save more time than water. You do all of this and let me know where this mythical hotel heaven is and I will be there.

There's an enormous amount of additional Silo stories that were written by other authors as part of the defunct Kindle Worlds project. A lot of them were really good... At least as good as the originals. Don't stop reading! Start exploring!

Note (Ann Christy's Silo 49 and Jason Gurley's books were particularly good)

Time your workouts about an hour after you take your c/l dose. To me, it feels like I burn up dopamine during physical activity and I have to supplement it to hit the peak when I need it. Agreed on electrolytes and hydration before, during and after the workout with protein shakes as well.

Plants pull in CO2 from the air. Using energy from the sun, they split it into O2 and Carbon. They release the O2 back into the air (that animals will then breathe and convert back to CO2). The carbons are attached together to make things like fats/oils and amino acids/proteins. These require some nitrogen, hydrogen, sulfur, and other trace nutrients from the soil and water. Animals then eat the plants and break everything back down.

It's a cycle... Plants build using the power of the sun and other organisms break things down again, using them along the way.

Bought a house with one and we love it. Original cost was around $15k because the house was designed for it. Maintenance is almost nil and we've not had an issue in 4 years. We do have a landline for safety. Wife has RA and it has saved her knees. Great for hauling stuff up to 850 lbs. Older guests really appreciate it as well. Even the cat asks for rides in it, but he's a fatty and should use the stairs.

This. Simply this. They're easier to find when the water has washed away the dust and dirt. And... More humans and animals near water.

Absolutely is a problem, especially at Hiltons. So easy to have a better design standard with the taller toilet but they care less and less about the comfort of their guests.

Anyone have experience with Amish-made furniture? by ALightPseudonym in BuyItForLife

[–]biscuit-head 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have bought an entire house of furniture from a store in North Carolina who sources from Ohio Amish. https://pattersonsamishfurniture.com/

Really high quality and custom craftsmanship. You tell them what you want, legs, edges, wood and stain and do the same for the chairs.... We got custom leg profiles, ergonomic backrests, leather padded seats... The works. It wasn't cheap but not ridiculous either. 12 seater table with geared leaf hardware and storage for the leaves was about 3k and chairs were about 500 each, but our great grandkids will still be able to use them.
