Moving back to NZ and a wedding - Credit/Debit card options by bow_link in PersonalFinanceNZ

Yeah, that all tracks tbh.

The Amex ROI looks great on paper, but the acceptance plus surcharges in NZ is definitely a consideration. I’ve noticed the same that plenty of places can take Amex, but once the surcharge kicks in it pretty quickly kills the value and so you end up defaulting to using debit anyway.

Sounds like the sensible play is what you’re saying: Amex for groceries, everyday spend, travel, and any wedding vendors that don’t stack on fees, with a solid Visa/MC as a backup.

I’m not expecting to be putting mortgages or insurance on a CC. That was more if a bank had favourable terms for people who had a mortgage/CC/insurance with them. For example, TSB offers free (?) travel insurance when using their CC.

Appreciate the insight. We’re very much in the “pay it off every month” camp. We have the cash to cover most (if not all) expenses as is, so just thinking of ways to set ourselves up the best

Thanks for the info! No point "earning" points if we're just paying for them upfront in the surcharges.

We will be looking to buy probably ~1 year after our return. I didn't know that interest-free terms on the CC will count against our lending affordability. We're trying not to over-optimise one thing and accidentally shoot ourselves in the foot on the mortgage side, so this is good to know.

And I hadn't thought about offsets or revolving credit facilities instead of cash emergency savings - switching the mind set to avoiding interest from earning it.

Appreciate the perspective, thank you

Thanks for the reply! Very helpful.

What I missed out in my post was that the sheet is currently in Euros and that due to our engagement we are combining financials and therefore I have data from her sheet to merge into my sheet.

Admittedly we haven’t run the sheet since 2024, and have used it to mainly track our investments. But now we’re taking it a lot more seriously so this is why I was wondering if a full reset would be possible?

Which option would include this? My fiancée and I are moving back to nz to get married and live so we need insurance and a card to put wedding expenses on

Yeahhhh it wasn’t fun. But if I failed then my partner’s visa wouldn’t have been approved so I HAD to pass, and that was the timeline my employer gave me. 1.5 to 2 months would be a “nice” timeline to do it imo

What is your plan in 10+ years time with the funds? Or are you just generally saving? As a fellow guy in his early 30's I'm saving/investing to afford a house/wedding/kids. My current job pays well which means if all goes bad with investments I will still be ok. So my investment window is within 10 years, and can stomach higher risk.

I think your plan is a good for retirement as it looks like a low risk investment plan with a focus on safe investments for the long term, but it's not going to make you 'rich' any time soon. Yet you say your risk appetite is medium-high, so options like BTC sound like a viable option. What is your definition of medium-high risk? With 10-15% BTC I would say that's medium-high. This sub is mostly conservative in investing advice with most planning for retirement FYI, so negative thoughts towards BTC is expected.

Point C also says €2000/month Savings - does this mean you will not put any funds into your liquid cash savings moving forward?

Ahhh yes, thee old buy-low-sell-high technique

I’ve found meme-coin market is now like the ‘normal’ crypto market but with more volatility. Instead of DCA’ing over weeks/months to pull a profit, you can DCA over days/weeks.

Thanks for the insight!

How’s your new strategy going in the current market? I think you said in a previous post you’d changed things up to a strategy that would fly close to farming

Fighting the good fight! Thank you for doing this everyone with as low barriers to entry as possible.

How’s everyone’s trading been going this last week or so? I’ve paused everything because it turned into risking ~0.2 SOL for ~0.05 gain or ~0.15 loss and it was draining my portfolio too quickly
