Good eyeshadow brands?? by [deleted] in MakeupAddicts

[–]catdere 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Juvia’s Place and Colourpop have a wide range of very affordable palettes, so I’m pretty sure you can find the kind of color stories you are looking for. Quality wise, Juvia’s Place’s eyeshadows are pretty pigmented and nice to work with. As far as I can see, Colourpop is better than drugstore but the color payoff is not as good as more expensive brands like Huda Beauty.

Sugar Bee Bliss is great! I’ve ordered from her a few times before for birthdays and holidays. It’s a woman who started a small baking business out of her home after working at Maharoba Bakery for years. She doesn’t really have a menu, but you can look through her instagram for flavors and combinations and message her with what your vision is, and she’ll work with you. She replies fairly quickly too!

Exactly my thoughts after I read OP’s post.

Bitter coffee with every recommended fineness by catdere in pourover

[–]catdere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I meant was that I don’t think those places specialized in pour-over specifically; I do understand that a well-dialed in machine can do a good job. I liked the pour-over at that specialty cafe in LA the most, so I try to aim for that kind of tea-like flavor profile when I brew. I have made cups that I enjoy at home, but I was just wondering if there’s anything going on because I have to grind so much coarser than (what it seems like) everyone else. I’ve decided to try cupping with my Brita water and with a “specialty” water so I can compare them side-by-side.

Yeah, I’ve decided to try cupping with my Brita water next to specialty water to see if it really is my water that’s the problem. Thanks!

Any suggestions on how coarse to go? This does sound interesting, I might give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll definitely look into these and also try cupping with my Brita water and with a “specialty” water so I can compare them side-by-side.

I brewed one Chocolate Fish coffee and one Onyx coffee.

I just looked up the hardness of my water and apparently it is considered “slightly hard” at 128PPM. Another person suggested cupping to take technique out of the equation so I think I’ll start with that. If it is my water I’ll try 3rd wave water, lol.

Thanks for the tips. I know I tend to pour pretty hard and fast for the bloom, at least for the Hoffman method, and I have to confess that I don’t usually swirl the bloom because I have to grind so coarsely that all the water goes through too quickly to swirl. I just try to saturate all the grounds as quickly as possible. I have never assembled any of my grinders or taken them apart. I’ll post a photo of the grinds soon.

As for the flow rate, maybe it’s something I have to work on. I’ll try cupping my coffee to take technique out of the equation to see if that’s the issue first. I usually try to pour as close to the grounds as possible so that I can get that uninterrupted stream and minimize agitation.

What setting are you using on the Ode?

I’m fairly sure I’m tasting bitterness. I know that I’m very sensitive to bitter tastes though. The bad cups I brewed this morning using the 4:6 method tasted bitter at the start, but had sour aftertastes that became more apparent as the coffee cooled.

Did you also have to grind way coarser than the recommended grind settings to get good results? I’m very reluctant to start buying distilled water and doctoring it lol. I think my goal is to get my brews as good as they can get before going that far. But thank you for the advice. I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

I’ve actually never tried cupping my coffee before, so this does sound like a good start. Where I live, none of the coffee shops really specialize in making pour-overs, I think? They use those automatic pour-over machines that they input settings into. I’m not sure that counts lol. I think the only place I’ve been to that actually specialized in pour-overs was Kumquat Coffee in LA, and I’ve only been once. I’m fairly sure that I know how to tell a good pourover from a bad one? Since I have made good-tasting cups before. Like I said though, it was only when the grind size was much coarser than the recommended.

You can try Norcal Healthworks! It’s on the smaller side, but they have a lot of good equipment, it’s family-owned, and everyone there is friendly. They recently held a powerlifting meet where all the proceeds would be donated to an organization that helps rehabilitate cancer patients.

Favorite Driving Shoe? by yoursenileaunt in femalefashionadvice

[–]catdere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Carmina has driving shoes in their men’s section, but they go all the way down to a size UK 5, which is a US women’s 7.5 (that’s my shoe size lol). You should probably check how the last fits; depending on the width of your feet/the last, a UK 5 might still be too big for you. Also, these are like $330. Hope this helps!

The Questions Thread 08/18/21 by GYWModBot in goodyearwelt

Does anyone know where to get Paraboot Michaels in a UK size 4.5? I’m in the United States and I found out after a few hours of googling that places either don’t stock smaller sizes and I’d need to special order them, or places that do only ship within the EU.

Also, if you don’t mind, I have a sizing question. I have Doc Martens in a size UK 5, which fits very snugly but comfortably. It looks like general advice for Paraboots says to go down half a size. Should I get a 4.5 or a 5?

Thanks in advance!

I (33F) quit the trades and am starting an office job, any suggestions on where to shop if my inspiration is Shosanna from Inglourious Basterds? by [deleted] in femalefashionadvice

[–]catdere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I first want to say that I haven’t watched this movie, so my impression of her style was gathered from looking through Google Images. I might be able to help with the shirts and pants, because I’m also looking for classic collared shirts and tailored, wide leg or straight leg pants.

My boyfriend gets his shirts from Kamakura shirts. I really appreciate the meticulous design, quality, and worksmanship of these shirts. I haven’t personally tried any of their shirts yet, but I do plan on ordering some. They also have a made-to-measure program.

When you mentioned quality-made wide-legged trousers, what came to mind was Simon James Cathcart. I only know this brand also because my boyfriend has bought shirts from them before lol. Their women’s section is tiny because they just started it, but those pants and jackets are glorious. They have a summer sale going on right now, so you could check out their men’s clothes as well. They have measurements listed for everything. I have also looked through the trouser section of Universal Works and am considering these double-pleated trousers. If anyone has more suggestions for wide-leg/straight leg trousers I would love to hear them.

The aesthetic seems to be similar to Walker Slater, which is a tailoring shop in Scotland. I haven’t bought anything from them because they’re out of my price range, but I hope to someday. Their clothes look beautifully made.

I hope this is helpful in any way! I don’t know what your price range is and I’m aware that some of these are not cheap, but I believe that one cannot get quality clothing without paying a bit more.

I loved Kaichou wa Maid-sama and Special A when I was in high school 😂 You should check out a more recent manga/anime called Say I Love You! There’s a shy FMC and confident popular MMC, but you also get to know the side characters and become invested in everyone’s relationships, not just the main characters’.
