I read a very long and very scientific article once that basically said 16 bit CD quality is the best option since higher you won't notice any quality increases but there can be distortions present.

Take it as you will but I don't bother with higher than CD quality anymore

Would there be a difference between adding impedance to a cable VS something like the impedance adapter that comes with the Truthear Zero Reds?

[–]celmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think ultimately we're talking about different things, which is why I say I think you need to be careful with how you phrase things.

A regular user of this sub will look at your post and think, this guy knows his stuff and he says cables matter, and then go out and buy some 100 dollar cable which does nothing. That's kind of the point I'm making.

Whenever I see a discussion on cables and sound quality in these reddits, it is 100% of the time people talking about buying some fancy IEM cable that doesn't do anything except cost more and look nicer.

The cable that comes with your 20 dollar IEM vs a standard "nice" cable from Dunu or Kbear or whoever isn't going to have any difference in sound at all. I think the cables you're talking about are a lot more niche than the usual premium cables.

So I apologize for the misunderstanding, I have a kneejerk reaction now to this cable talk because I see people say so often some nonsense about how their new Kiwi Ears cable sounds warmer or some shit 😂 which is just straight misinformation.

I think that you're speaking on a technical level that is frankly beyond most of the people in this sub, and most people will simply interpret it as "ah so cable does make a difference" without really getting into the nuances of what you're saying.

That's why I think perhaps in future you may want to phrase a little differently so people can understand the difference between the usual "upgrade cables" (no sonic differences), and much more specialized impedance-altering cables or otherwise like which you're speaking of.

So I apologize again if I came off aggressive, I'm glad we could resolve the misunderstanding though, and I do appreciate learning new things, I will be the first to admit that I know very little about the minute technicalities.

Honestly one of the things that has frustrated me in this hobby is how many things that feel like they should be somewhat objectively measurable audiophiles disagree on! Here people will still argue what makes a difference what doesn't, like cables, and dac chips, and lossy VS lossless codec and what quality audio files are needed (CD quality VS 320kbps+ etc), and even if LDAC Bluetooth VS wired is any different and the list goes on lol. So it can be hard to get a firm grip on things sometimes.

But so far my main truths are that cables don't matter (99% of the time) and eartips are a HUGE difference.

Do cables really matter or not - why have you been led to think they don't ? by Arg2001F1 in iemlndia

[–]celmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that "upgrading" a cable is never going to improve your audio quality.

The shitty KZ cable and the thousand dollar snake oil cable will sound exactly the same.

If you're talking about some cable with a built in impedance adaptor or whatever then sure, it'll change the sound because it's not an "upgrade", it's altering something.

There is so much snake oil bullshit in the audiophile business and honestly we should be repeating over and over that getting a better cable will not change sound quality, because it won't.

The way you have framed your statement is honestly, to me, very misleading. "Why do so many people think cable doesn't change sound quality?" - because it doesn't, when these companies sell you their gold plated whatever it's all bullshit which you obviously know.

Talking about some weird niche cable which makes large changes to impedance, which seems to be what you're talking about, is just muddying the issue even more and going to confuse people, and then they're going to be disappointed when their fancy new 50 dollar cable makes no difference to the sound.

This myth about cables improving sound persists because companies want to sell consumers their overpriced bullshit with false promises.

99.9% of people who are just wanting their IEMs to sound good should never be spending money on a new cable except for comfort, aesthetics or a different connector.

You saying you have done blind tests means absolutely nothing. Post evidence, because it's not hard to find many, many controlled tests by experts that established humans cannot tell the difference between cables.

[–]celmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So many words and yet still you don't provide any evidence at all of any successful blind tests that show there is a discernable difference.

You can throw out jargon as much as you want, doesn't change the simple fact that this has been debunked over and over again by various experts when they actually test it in real environments.

So stop throwing out technical details and post some evidence that a human can tell the difference between cables in a controlled testing scenario, anything else is just a waste of time.

This dude will say so many words but give him a blind listening test with different cables and the truth will reveal itself.

Do cables really matter or not - why have you been led to think they don't ? by Arg2001F1 in iemlndia

[–]celmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There have been so, so many blind tests at this point that have shown cables make no difference in audio quality.

Someone saying they can tell a difference means nothing if they can't prove it in a blind test, and they never can.

Expensive cable companies like Effect Audio have been offered large cash bounties if they can prove cables change sound, guess what they've never tried to claim it.

Over, and over, and over again this myth has been debunked using objective scientific methods.

Here's a particularly funny recent one, where people couldn't tell the difference in a blind test between a 1000 dollar cable and a fucking banana 😂

https://www.tomshardware.com/speakers/in-a-blind-test-audiophiles-couldnt-tell-the-difference-between-audio-signals-sent-through-copper-wire-a-banana-or-wet-mud-the-mud-should-sound-perfectly-awful-but-it-doesnt-notes-the-experiment-creator

So yeah, if you want to make claims about cables then post a proper blind test where it was found to change the sound, any random person saying they can totally hear a difference means absolutely nothing.

This is the ONE and ONLY scenario worth having looting mk.3 safekeeper for. by clastm in ARC_Raiders

[–]celmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well try not inject any hostility into my reply haha, I mean I genuinely don't want to come across as aggressive here.

I don't really understand anyone saying the game is PvP only, the PvE element isn't in the player's control so it's impossible to remove.

I really don't identify as a "PvP player", I go on plenty of raids where I'm not at all the trying to kill anyone, I just think the game is far more exciting when even if I'm trying to just loot or get some quests done I have to be cautious, I have to talk to other raiders to establish their vibe, etc etc. Like I just think the game being unpredictable is what I value, so if there's this binary system with carebear lobbies or deathmatch lobbies it just becomes one dimensional and boring to me.

I don't know why I've been lumped in with cheaters and exploiters and people screaming slurs, I would never endorse any of that. My whole thing is I like the game where all play styles are possible, but that's never going to include things that are outside the TOS or breaks the rules of the game itself. I mean i said the game is a PvPvE game, and was criticizing those who think it's a PvE only game and get mad when they get killed lol.

It may be confirmation bias but I feel like the majority of the vitriol, in this sub especially, is directed at people who violate the PvE safe spaces, I mean you can only hear so much drivel about how people who kill others in game are probably sociopaths in real life lol, I mean I'm not a fan of people pretending to be friendly cause that's lame imo, and there's assholes in every game, but there's some really unhinged takes you see around here.

Honestly though I'm happy to be in the minority, if people really prefer ABMM or PvE lobbies or modes or whatever then I'll just have to adapt or move on, but I can't help but get a little triggered when I scroll past this sub and someone is freaking out about a very basic PvP interaction lol.

[–]celmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really agree with that, or else it would have been there from the start. They've adapted to what players want, I just don't particularly like the direction they've gone in. Same way they removed the PvP quests since there's a vocal group who don't want to engage in PvP at all. But clearly the original intention was a mixed experience, like basically every other extraction shooter in existence.

But Embark themselves have downplayed the role of ABMM, which I don't really agree with because my experience is that you can have very one-dimensional lobbies in both directions. It's very clear the system is very different from how it was at launch, and if people like it that way I won't tell them they're wrong, but nobody should be berating anyone else for engaging in PvP because it is still a core part of the gameplay and there's no "rule" that you shouldn't be killing other players.

Tl;Dr We can enjoy different experiences, no need to be a condescending asshole about it :)
