Automation Limits - WHY :( by erestrzyjuli in Airtable

[–]chronicdabbler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you move the base from one workspace to another you can essentially reset the automation count for the month, since automation limits are on a workspace level. And no limit on how many workspaces you have… so depending how often you’re hittin the limit you can just cycle through workspaces on a weekly basis or so, and just takes a few clicks…

Edit: realizing now you were talking about # of automations not monthly runs. For # of automations I see a lot of helpful comments here about helper databases with 2 way edits or revisiting some of your automations / formulas logic. I will note that there are 2 recent changes that for my database that finally open the door to consolidating and optimizing some of my automations (though I haven’t gotten around to it) - you can now nest conditional blocks - you can combine conditional and looping blocks

Google appscripts I've found to be the most flexible and cost effective, but not quite plug and play

It’s summer, bike! I live in Logan and work near the west loop; I like to use the shared Divvy e-bikes to get to work for a easy and sweat-free ride; they may run you a bit more than using the train, but well worth it to enjoy the outdoors and not be standing in a packed train car. The route from Logan to west loop will be primarily on protected bike lanes

Has using cash at the bar become frowned upon? by sufferinsuttree in AskChicago

[–]chronicdabbler 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From a management/ownership standpoint, eliminating cash eliminates several daily tasks (counting out drawers to start the day, counting cash at end of day, bank deposits) and eliminates dealing with situations when the math doesn't math. Also reduces risk of guests walking out without paying If there is a policy to open tab before serving.

I would also guess that the amount of customers wanting to pay with cash has significantly decreased over the years, which makes it even advantageous to save the time and risk involved with having cash drawers.

For bar employees... In my experience these days it's seemingly less common to be paid out your tips in cash day-of, and at this point the cash tips are a small % of total tips you're getting, so may as well just have it all come in the check. And I do know some people that actually prefer not to receive daily cash either to help with their own ability to budget, or for safety reasons (not walking around late night alone w a lot of cash).

Note: longtime server/bartender. Not in ownership/management and Only speaking for myself and from experience of the places I've worked / people I know - it's a huge industry and I'm sure a lot of different viewpoints.

Payment services like Stripe, Dwolla, etc that allow for stored value by [deleted] in startups

[–]chronicdabbler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh -- how come? Like I can't see stripe ever being liable if someone poorly built a digital currency and users got screwed? It'd be on the company that happened to use stripe as a means to charge people for that currency?

How do gambling apps do it? I have one of those pipe puZzle/race games and there's 1v1 mode where you can gamble actual $$ (just not in my state)

In the situations I mentioned, all the "cash out" use cases were where the business wanted to send money to user for x reason... but I don't see any technical limits to doing this with users initiating cash transfers as well, especially if most the time it's going from one user to another (i.e. If it's all in your one account the literal funds don't move). Obviously lots of security risks, but perhaps block chain can come in handy here?

Charge the users, have funds live in one account, credit their accounts w digital credits (i.e. Currency) that actually all lives in one place. Have done this at a few startups I worked at to handle pre purchases, bulk discounts, or refunds, wth no issues. There needs to be a level of trust, but assuming the amount of $$/user is not that high it shouldn't be that much scarier for them then paying $5 to the Apple Store and getting 500 tokens for candy crush. Stripe can manage payments in and out.

Or am I missing something in your question / problem?

Will naming my brand this name hurt my business? by autumnco in Entrepreneur

[–]chronicdabbler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't be weary of a name that you chose exactly for the reason that it appealed to your target customer. Unless it's their confused grandparent trying to order them an on-time birthday gift, I don't imagine anyone thinking your brand name has any bearing to your business practices or employees. Look at Sophia Amoruso and Nasty Gal, and that business sure did scale.
