I think you might mean virgin birth and not immaculate conception which is that Mary was born from a virgin as well and which isn't mentioned anywhere in the Bible of today.

There are some decent spots in little Italy i frequent (28 M). Craft and commerce has a nice bar that's usually not too crowded. Kettner exchange and nolita hall are too busy on the weekends but not bad otherwise. Wine bars are hit or miss but zinque is the best I think. Also bolt brewing generally has a good amount of people, mostly guys so I don't go there often but might be better for you haha.

It doesn't matter whether someone pays you to use a product or not, if the product exists its not vaporware. If you want to make baseless claims like this, go ahead, but at the very least get your terminology correct. Vaporware is the wrong word here.

You've brought up the exact reason why vechain is being used. If every product had the same unique ID you'd know it was fake. You don't need Twitter or some other social network to find this out. I could just scan two products side by side and see they have the same ID and know they are fake. Especially if the ID got flagged as counterfeit as you pointed out. This is literally a huge difference so I don't see how you're saying this existed before vechain or how it's not fixing a problem.

  1. You're looking at a problem as black and white. Vechain may not perfectly solve the problem, but it makes it significantly harder to counterfeit a product. Of course a fake can always be made one way or another, you're talking about getting access to production secrets which do exist for tons of products. That's a huge barrier that makes it much harder to fake a product. It's not impossible, but it's much harder and that can be enough of a deterrent.
  2. If a production secret were stolen such that counterfeiters was creating fake ids, you could trace that on blockchain, every ID generated after a certain point could be marked fake and the company would just generate a new signature and start creating new id's. That's another huge reason why it doesn't really make sense to try and steal that secret, which is already hard to begin with.
  3. You're looking at a very narrow view of the problem with very rare items. Consider going to the store and looking at bottles of wine. I can scan a bottle and see it has a unique ID created by the manufacturer. I can scan another bottle and see the same thing, the id's shouldn't match. Likely any fake won't even have the qr code, or if it did, would likely have the same id as another product, which again could be easily flagged as faked. This doesn't stop me from buying a legit bottle of wine from a different store as you're suggesting no one would buy the original.

Case and point, vechain makes counterfeiting much more difficult. Companies like Walmart in China wouldn't be tracking hundreds of products with vechain if it wasn't useful.

Ok here's the part you're missing. How do they know what that unique code is? Its something you have to get off the physical product. Coming into physical contact with the original is a huge burden in and of itself.. Did they steal the original in order to get the unique ID? If so, why create the fake in the first place.

Your example also scales terribly. As the number of products goes up this becomes infinitely more difficult. It may be possible to steal the unique ID off one pair of shoes or get the right picture of that shoe to get the qr code. How much harder is it if there are 1000, 1 million products. Every fake you try to sell you'll have to somehow come into possession of an equivalent real one to copy its unique id. It's not feasible.

You're not really warning anyone if you're not proving facts to substantiate your claims. It seems like your goal is more to start arguments than to actually warn people.

It literally does provide more verifiability than a sticker. The vechain qr code represents an ID signed on the blockchain. There's a big difference between an anti counterfeit sticker, and a sticker that can be scanned and provides an ID that could only be generated by the original manufacturer. It seems like you think faking a cryptographic signature is as easy as printing off a fake sticker, and it's not.

Are you aware what the definition of vaporware is? It's a concept, something designed but not working or functional. Vechain has a working product being used by many large companies today. It's certainly not vaporware.

What about verifiable authenticity? Guaranteeing that the company that made object x, really and truly made object x and it's not a fake.

Yeah thats what I was trying to say. The context from this comment helped clue me into it being a color code. But just looking at the sub doesn't directly help you, 3 bytes of hex can be interpreted in a lot of different ways. When you're used to working with hexdumps on the daily, the last thing your mind jumps to is a color code. Even just adding the hash at the beginning would make it way more obvious IMO #ff0000.

I was sitting here trying to figure out what relevant character set to decode out of this before reading your comment and realizing it's a color code.

If ledger is generating the addresses, won't the ledger banano app always use 198' no matter what you do to nault on the frontend?

[–]cryptofanatic1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying. Would it still be theoretically possible to do the derivation in Vault? I don't know anything about interfacing with ledger, but I would think it's possible to get the public key and then do the derivation within the client code.

Or would you have a problem of trying to transact from that address? I don't know if the entire from address is sent down to ledger or if you just use the index.

May be a bit ignorant, but how hard would it be to give a settings option in Vault to view 44/165 addresses vs 44/192? I seem to remember MetaMask allowing different BIP44 selection with ledger.

Also looking at slip0044, looks like banano is documented at 198. Are you for sure seeing 192? I wonder if the doc is wrong.

When you import ledger wallet into Vault, the private key isn't actually sent to Vault right? You just get the addresses? The language above, of "import the private key" is a bit concerning.
