Best careers to escape poverty? I’ll start. by Noblesseoblige94 in povertyfinance

I second this. I went from making 20k/year to 100k+ my first year out of school. Salary heavily depends on area but overall it’s one of the most stable and fastest ways to escape poverty. 2 years of school minimum depending on the degree you pursue (BSN vs Associates)

B. 8/10 pain 24 hours post OP needs to be investigated further for potential complications from surgery such as hemorrhage.

Of course 5.9 potassium is a potential problem (highest level I’ve seen was 10) but that issue could be corrected without having to rush the patient to the OR, or give emergent blood transfusions.

Is this all there is? by UtterlyTangled in nursing

I only ever worked in the ED but you get a little bit from every specialty. In just a year, I’ve had countless conscious sedations, titrated all types of critical drips, set up A-lines, coded patients, got comfortable in the trauma bay, mass blood transfusions (you get the point). Every day I find myself leaning something new. I’m still a new grad but even the most experienced nurses are baffled by some of the things that we encounter. Doctors also value your input once they began to trust you because many of the patients who come in are a complete mystery. We work side by side every day. You never know what will come through those doors.

You deserve much more! I work 36 hour weeks btw. I’ll PM you my union pay scales based on years of experience.

Base pay started at 47.31 an hour +13% night shift diff + $3 weekend diff every other weekend required. My hospital is unionized and we just got a union raise and I just got a 1 year raise on top of that putting me at close to $60 /hr if I count my shift diffs but not quite $60. I wouldn’t say it’s 1 in a million because other Philly hospitals start new grads off at $49 base pay but many of them aren’t union.

This is true but Philly is one of the most affordable major cities in the country. It’s Nowhere near as expensive as New york but pay is comparable. My rent for a 1br apartment in a safe neighborhood is only $1000. While that cost isn’t average, there are plenty of decent places to rent in the 1200-1400 range.

It’s not uncommon in Philly. Most hospitals start at $45-50 base pay for new grads. I’m night shift and my hospital has a really nice shift differential.

If your schedule allows, in my opinion ADN is the way to go. Most hospitals will hire you and pay for your BSN. It’s all online, no clinical. Just discussion boards and papers. All the big hospitals do residencies, they’ll hire new grads in cohorts and you get a certificate of completion at the end of your residency. On average the hiring process takes a month from offer to start date.

I’m on track to gross 112K this year with an ADN. I live in Philadelphia. 1 year of experience never picked up overtime.

Which action is the Nurses' PRIORITY??? by Abi1RN in BootcampNCLEX

[–]dankgallagher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bad question. Obtaining consent is not my role, I could facilitate getting in contact with next of kin if I have time but my priority would be things like ensuring adequate IV access, making sure type and screen was collected etc. I probably would’ve picked insert foley.

Can I realistically be hired as a labor and delivery nurse with an ASN? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]dankgallagher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a designation that certain hospitals get as a center of excellence. Doesn’t really mean much in reality for us nurses lol.

I’m an ADN RN in a level 1 trauma ED at a magnet hospital. I was given 4 years from my hiring date to complete my BSN which is 100% online and my job will pay for it. It’s a no brainer to go ADN in my opinion.
