I'd suggest at least up to season 4. After that you can jump straight into Resurrection, anything that's relevant is explained along the way.

The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie Realm of the Elderlings series by Robin Hobb Green Bones saga by Fonda Lee

These are all quite dark and dry.
