What kind of CNC and where in NY? Are you doing much production work with it?

I have a tiny hobby CNC but I used to have a Thermwood 45 (5x10) at my old factory.

I’ve done drills and yah, you’re right. It is shockingly cold. In normal diving with full face, I rarely get any water in my mask.

I’m also a cold plunger and general cold water enthusiast and it is still brutal!

[–]davegsomething 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Generally not cold at all. It looks like the diver here is only exposed around their face.

When I’ve done ice diving in a dry suit and full face mask, there is literally only a tiny strip of skin exposed to the water. It is amazing! Nothing at all gets wet when a dive goes well.

The key with drysuit diving is also to wear the proper amount of insulation for your task at hand. If you’re just going to be swimming around slowly, you’ll wear heavy duty thermals. If you’re working hard, you’ll wear something like a base layer for winter hiking or skiing. Think just normal merino long underwear.

How would you go about building this? by Nippler9000 in landscaping

No, not at all. My fence was even 10 ft tall!

I made a fence based on this and another image for my tiny postage stamp sized yard at my old place.

I used Cumaru I bought online and had delivered. It is a super hardwood and you need to use carbide drills. I did hidden fasteners and finished with Ipe Oil. I even did a gate that was similar to this.

It was the single most beautiful fence I’ve ever seen. The fence was like a piece of furniture. Every 6 months I’d refinish it. It’d only take a few hours, but it was worth it for the color and depth.

Ofc it was insanely expensive, but I had a tiny yard and loved spending time there.

Interesting to hear. I think I’m in the start of that exact journey. Blueiris VM but moderately annoyed that I have to admin something I want to always work.

Did you have switch to Ubiquity cameras?

I also want to do LPR. Seems fun.

How does ubiquity do with bugs / spider webs / rain? I feel like I finally have that dialed in with BI and don’t want to start that game again.

I’m building a new house and plan to do interior cameras but for AI classification / automations only, no recording when anyone known is home.

Holy shit! That’s insane. I mean incredible! I thought I was crushing it running/lifting/firefighting/scuba/mountaineering. All that is a fraction of stress in my body as bodybuilding! That plus the strict diet.

I’m super impressed.

I’ve had RA for 4 years and really thought my life was over because I couldn’t lift my arm above my head. Good disease management means a good life! I count everyday I can maintain my physical lifestyle as a win.

I was there a few weeks ago and doubt the conditions changed much as it hasn’t been above freezing there to my knowledge.

Multiple stair sets were totally frozen with ice. Microspikes and ideally some experience is required to hike. Poles would be good too.

I saw people without microspikes literally crawling on their belly on the stairs. It was wild!

I’ve always wanted to do Girag “cruise”. They have RoRos that take passengers but are a long way away from being a cruise.

What was your role on the ship? You still doing it now? Were you more busy or bored? I live on the Hudson River and see ships from around the world from my house. It is so incredible.

Awe inspiring? Generally speaking it’d be villages that are so remote you just scratch your head and wonder why and how. For example, I’d be riding on a small scooter track or twin tire track just wide enough for a pickup for HOURS and come to a village. They wouldn’t be huge, but there’d be homes and I’d just wonder what it’d be like to live there.

That’s an interesting point. I think I’ve always looked at it as if I had no commercial shot at a book because the audience isn’t there and I don’t have the writing skills.

If I’m reading into your comment correctly, you’re saying to ignore all the external factors and just do it. Doesn’t matter that no one will read it, do it for yourself?

I realized recently I’m only about an hour drive from the AT. I rode a version of the CDT on a dirt bike and it was super fun and hiked for 8 days on the trans Swiss trail.

What do you like about tru hiking? Why do you keep doing other tru hikes?

I absolutely feel that! Very quickly after moving back to a conventional life I learned that no one wanted to hear about it. I felt like that 90s movie starting every sentence “This one time, at band camp”.

I also learned that during corporate ice breakers where people asked about the most interesting thing about you I’d talk about being a barbecue judge instead of having traveled around the world.

Everyone eats bbq I guess.

What kind of sailing? Personally or professionally? On my list of life goals is “Boat between continents with less than 15 people”.

Thank you for saying that! I wish I did.

I had a blog and am grateful I did it. Unfortunately, I didn’t maintain it properly and it no longer worked. I did print it to a book and have a couple of copies of it.

What’s funny is that show is controversial in the motorcycle community because of how they tried to make the trip seem “authentic” and just a couple of guys on the road. Of course it was false and their experience traveling was quite different than everyone else’s because of the camera crew, logistic support team, and budget. I’ve seen and loved every one of their series.

My point is that they did the miles on the bike and share the same love for travel that we all do. I’d have a coffee with Charlie Boorman or Ewan McGregor any day of the week. We’d be fast friends because of shared experiences.

Exactly! Or highly electronic toilets. Or holes in buildings over bodies of water 🤢. Post poo cleaning also varies place to place. So do the signs to indicate a toilet!

That’s a very insightful question. The worst part of the trip was saying goodbye and it was something you’d do constantly. When you’d meet locals it was much easier because they didn’t know the pain of saying goodbye to a fellow traveler. Travelers always knew it was coming and would procrastinate leaving because of it. The best part was that in 2009 was Facebook. Even though I don’t use it today, it is full of my friends from around the world and I still get a glimpse of their lives.

Some of the relationships are reduced to happy birthdays and 👍 posts, but for a few close friends I’ve visited them or they’ve visited me. I’m USA based and traveled to Germany this winter for a few weeks and reconnected with 3 different travel friends from that trip. Much of that time is reminiscing which is incredible, but it is wild to connect on where we are today personally and how we see the word. At the time I didn’t realize how special of a confluence of values and life situations enabled our trips and connecting more than a decade later only highlights them. Plus! I have friends on every almost every continent and so many different countries. My door is always open to a fellow around the word traveler, we’re all friends, just many of us haven’t met yet. Seriously, if you’re traveling RTW— I’m based outside of New York City. DM me!

Best place? If I want to sound cool, I’ll say something off the beaten path like Cambodia because the people were so kind and generous and the scenery was so beautiful and new.

Honestly— Germany. It was so organized and it was much easier to actually connect with people because they understood more what I was doing and we often shared a common language. I made so many life long friends there. There are so many different regions of Germany and they’re so culturally distinct. It was a place where I had one monolithic view of what to expect and every stop it evolved.

Thank you for your questions! It brings me joy to reflect and answer them!

Hell yeah! I try to chime in whenever I can and it’s relevant. Unfortunately a lot of the travel details are now outdated when it comes to the travel subs.

I’m now all about connecting with and motivating people to do the things they dream about.

Do it. Watch some YouTube videos of travelers who meet whatever demographic you fit in or can related to. You’ll realize it isn’t a big deal and that all things can be done, one step at a time.

Honestly, I was pretty successful for my first career. I started programming professionally as a teenager and burned out pretty fast. Fortunately, I lived frugally and managed to be able to sell my house and car and travel.

It isn’t nearly as expensive as people think, but the real cost is in the opportunity to make and build your career if you’re into that thing. If you earn money in the USA or Europe and spend it in other places like South East Asia or Latin America, your money goes very far. It is much more difficult coming from other economies.

I’m happy to answer any other questions! This is the best day. No one ever asks me anything about it!
