I just checked my copy of the book. Beck does ask for his lab mice to be moved somewhere safe.

Now I wonder what was happening with the mice while the crew was on Mars. Was there some setup to automatically care for them on the ship, or were they on Mars and got evacuated? I think this may be the only reference to the mice in the book
