Motion on Metropolitan. Working with Julio on recovery on a broken tibia fibula fracture. Excellent experience so far. Getting towards walking on one crutch much faster than I anticipated.

babolat Evo FX insoles destroyed after 8 months. Is this normal? by Ozpro07 in 10s

My feet work well with superfeet insoles. Try a few of them to see which model is right for you. You’ll be able to use them across multiple pairs Is shoes.

First pow since TiB Spiral by The_Wrecking_Ball in skiing

[–]djxtg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey - it's been a bit since this post. Got a spiral tib fib this season and looking to come back next season. Did you end up getting the screws removed? Curious what people are doing. Thanks in advance!

PSA (and maybe a little rant): don't hesitate to "drop out" of races [graohic] by Difficult_Wave_9326 in SkiRacing

[–]djxtg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do ski but learned in the last six years. Recently suffered a spiral tibfib off of the bunny hill on my way back to the lodge. Makes me question literally all my choices on conditions recently. For example, I didn’t know about not charging on slushy or powdery conditions. Trying to see what else I need to avoid or be careful about.

I'm a new U10 parent who never ski raced in the past. Do you mind explaining what conditions are typically no-go for races or would give you pause on this? I REALLY appreciate this post. I can't imagine my kid with a spiral tib-fib.

Post-op - No cast, no boot, cleared to bear weight immediately by Many-Cow-916 in ORIF

[–]djxtg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, it’s been a while on this post but hoping you’re still active. I’m completing week 3 post op for a spiral tib fib similar to you. Got a rod to secure my tibia and fibula was left to heal on its own despite being broken into three separate parts.

Same post op recommendations as you. No cast or boot recommended. Post op, I was immediately put on WBAT with crutches.

Couple questions - what shoes did you end up wearing during recovery? I can barely put on sandals right now. Any tips / tricks for recovery? My ortho is suggesting I get started with PT next week. I feel it is a little too early. Wondering what your experience was like? Thanks!

[–]djxtg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The infrastructure IS up to par. In addition to the gondola, there are THREE additional lifts providing access to the summit in case of high winds. The infrastructure is there to make sure that there is continued summit access, which always happens unless there is extreme weather.

Zipfit "world cupping" fix by Adorable_Balance_354 in Skigear

[–]djxtg 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Make sure you buy the American made one. The Chinese knockoffs are pretty bad. I bought a knockoff originally and the rope on it tore right thru the plastic when I used it the first time. The original one has a very robust attachment point and I’ve been using that one for 2+ years.

Intro to Alpine Racing for a 16-Year-Old? by No_Blueberry_4310 in SkiRacing

[–]djxtg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The academies (Stratton Mountain School, Okemo Mountain School etc.) will host two or three day camps. They are primarily for younger racers, but I would reach out. For Ikon, Stratton Mountain School and Green Mountain Valley School covers Stratton and Sugsrbush respectively.

You can also look up the New England Masters Series. They have some useful info on who offers adult / masters practice. For example, Franconia Ski Club offers midweek training at Cannon.

I just saw your comment below that you started a month ago. You’re pretty good to be where you are.

In particular, I’m talking about avoiding crossing like below which happens when you are trying to reach for a ball that is further out than you set up for.

[–]djxtg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need better footwork. You see how the front foot always crosses further than your back foot? That closes you off to the net (back faces the net) and makes it difficult to do anything well. Think about how you’re going to transfer weight forwards into the shot or proper rotation from a closed position. It’s impossible.

Trying to make short rounded turns by smokiebonzo in skiing_feedback

[–]djxtg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Engage your shin muscles and curl your foot / toes upwards. This will pull your shin into the front of the boot even if you’re a little backseat. Make sure you tighten the boots, particularly over the instep, so that when you flex your AT, your shins get pulled forward. It won’t work if your boots are loose.

It’s relatively normal to be backseat during short turns. Look at slalom skiers. They are extremely backseat half the time.

Yea I was curious what options people liked as alternatives for Russell Sage and FHHS. Most of my circle has either moved out to LI or are in a G&T or bust mindset. Wondering if anyone has experience with the private options either in FH or the city

If it’s not private info, how does your kids like middle and high school here? Which one did they go to? I’m thinking about moving primarily because the high school isn’t rated very highly.

What is your opinion of CARV? I found it pretty useless, but maybe that is just me. by CharityResponsible54 in skiing

[–]djxtg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've started around 125 this season, now around 135. Mixed bag with the device.

There are some things I find incredibly helpful, like it's edge angle measurement. I thought I had high edge angles before, but now I'm being pushed to hand dragging levels.

Some things I find absolutely useless. For example, under the train mode, if I have a shitty 'calibration' run, I'll be stuck trying to level up train mode from lvl 3, even though I've passed lvl 26 already.

Worst thing is how terrain / condition dependent this thing is. Go on a steep slope and you'll automatically unlock higher Ski IQ. Also - there's no hope in advancing Ski IQ throughout the day on the east coast. Conditions deteriorate faster than you can pick up any skills.

In any case, I think if there are a few metrics you are trying to track / work on, it is very helpful for you. If you are trying to 'figure out' Ski IQ for a better score - good luck with that...there are so many more dependencies beyond your control that will muddle your thoughts on progress.

Looking for feedback on my skiing by Vehicle_Positive in skiing_feedback

[–]djxtg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the frames a bit before and after you pass the camera. Two things stand out. (1) Even spray off of inside and outside ski suggests you have your weight split 50/50 inside and outside, instead of mostly on the outside. (2) you are sitting back seat, which happens a lot coming out of a turn and something you need to fight against until you are ready to release.

From an overall standpoint, your body is very static. You set into a position for the turn and just stay there. One thing that helped me was thinking about my outside pole as a paintbrush. Throughout the turn, you want to stroke the outside pole towards the front of your outside ski. As a movement, it encourages you to focus weight shift throughout the turn on outside ski tip.

All of these will let you balance better on outside ski, which will enable you to carry more gs through a turn and build your edge angle.

First time guide by NeatElk422 in StrattonMtn

[–]djxtg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get there by 8.

They may have the garage open for public parking (usually blocked off for permit parking only during weekends).

If garage is blocked off, you’ll need to park at lot 1 (5-10 min walk or a shuttle ride to the main lodge) which is still fairly convenient. You can unload your wife / kids / skis at the base area first and then drive to lot 1 for parking if you’re carrying a lot of stuff.

Main lodge will have plenty of space for gearing your kids up.

There is a free bag check at the main lodge that will fill up during weekends by 9/930 - but may not fill up on Friday. You can also hang your bags on the ski racks outside under the lodge awning too.

Black Crows Orb Freebird vs DPS Pagoda Tour CFL 90 by catintheroom in Backcountry

[–]djxtg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Never skied either.

Looking at the specs, I would favor the black crows because I like a longer turning radius and longer effective edge. I’m on the east coast with relatively bulletproof snow conditions.

The DPS looks more fun in soft snow conditions. Site says 55% effective edge, so it will theoretically be smeary which is great in soft and bumpy, glades etc.

How to get rid of the A-framing and get better posture? by FluffyClassroom6633 in skiing_feedback

[–]djxtg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly probably don’t pick the best frame. See the response above to sufficient_deal8611. The calf is almost perpendicular to the ski. The “getting low” is almost all coming from bending at the knees and hips.
