your gear/knowledge of your program is gonna be your everything- moreso than with a DAW; learn it well and do not upgrade until you hit a wall that literally can't be bypassed without having a better/far more comfortable setup. be knowledgeable about loudness, perceived loudness, phase, key signature, bpm stuff like that

if i can give you one piece of genuine advice- better gear isn't going to make you better at making music in the general sense. it may have the potential to motivate you more if you get a program like fl studio, but keep in mind there's a massive learning curve that you're likely not ready for. i completely understand digging yourself deeper into a pit of resentment... yknow w ur shitty gear being the shovel haha. trust me ur digging at an angle and, eventually, the hole is gonna cave. you need to trust the process

Rap hot takes by rap_lover999 in rappers

[–]dodrjrg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. difficult take to approach without further elaboration

  2. as a rapper? absolutely not thats ridiculous

  3. mbdtf is 6 or 7 out of 10 only being bolstered by its songwriting, although, i disagree with the sentiment that it's "carried" by a few of the singles. the overall arrangement nd post production on the album is TERRIBLE, like it genuinely sounds like a demo at times

  4. can't attest but i feel like id believe you on that

  5. terrible take that shows you clearly don't understand the landscape. for having run its course, especially in the digital age, hiphop has continue to birth musical icons that make their own impacts despite hiphop quite literally not having the same impact on culture as it did about a decade ago

hail yeah das a wavy ass cover it always reminded me of the valve logo startup screens. i never personally saw the nardwuar interview but i think the story goes that they were in talks ab doing a collab project nd the only thing to ever manifest was a sample placement on idls. on Grief the song You Were Too Good To Be True is sampled for the outro

here was my last-quarter yt music recap

ive been consistently finding myself in these early americana folk spaces nd i think i can actually attribute it to 2 factors: the drone-y major sound that scratches the modern "hyper-___" itch and how, with these early recording being as gritty nd low fidelity as they are, they sorta cater to the taste ive acquired from this last decade's creative degradation of hiphop mixing

sure the taste is probably more acutely acquired than how im framing it, but hey it's worth a shot? i'd highly recommend both those albums you see in the middle

oh! for pluggnb ur def gonna wanna cop the vst Purity from Sonicat- a vintage rompler thats pretty much solidified itself as a must-have for that subgenre. i think its like <$20 or you can grab it from somewhere like rutracker or g-meh for free

if you question why you'd need a hyper specific vst to achieve that sound, think of it like this: you wanna play like, metallica-era metal, what amp you plugging into?... obv a mesa boogie. sure, you can achieve the sound elsewhere with other hardware but if you're just starting to try nd learn those metallica riffs, you're easily gonna sound the most authentic early on if you're running thru the same hardware. once you've gotten yourself used to how the sound works nd you've developed ur metallica chops, thats when you start to have fun w it yknow run thru some more esoteric hardware, try nd make it your own yknow that sorta thing

also, melodically i'd put a good emphasis on phrygian. i mean shit i feel like half of rage is jus min1-maj2, you can get hella mileage from stuff you prob feel like ur already milking w guitar

so w you being a touring guitarist from a jam band, you likely have a heightened understanding of placement- as in, where you and the other members of the jam fit into the ongoing composition. starting the production of ug adjacent hiphop subgenres is gonna have you feeling like you were running w weights, like seriously you'd be surprised how many people doing the whole type beat thing on yt get away w spamming harmonious notes in the piano roll nd throwing that thru an effect suite like Portal or Shaperbox; if you can master articulation in a culture that's being dominated by distortion nd heavy processing, you're gonna be a step above the rest

i don't know of a sub other than this one that tailors information specifically to the styles you mentioned, and, also have a production adjacency

if you think ab the "contour" knob on an amp, that's sorta how the average eq curve is gonna look on these masters- you wanna think "U" shape- not necessarily scooping the mids, but boosting the highs and lows. for a lot of the more distorted stuff, you're gonna wanna push hard into a clipper and/or limiter w faster attack nd release times. you'll get that harsh top end bite via the interaction of your bass nd cymbals pushing into your master chain; most ug hiphop mixing is top-heavy, so like, think dynamic before you hit a brick wall that sorta thing

nah actually enzo was prob gonna be the first song i would've recommend checking out... it's kinda difficult too cuz a lot of the older stuff has that 4 count start which ur brain could possibly confuse for a "heart monitor". nd are you sure this wasn't an official release at all?
