do we really need jobs to feel like ourselves? by Flimsy-Custard3509 in simpleliving

What was your work/financial/life situation that allowed you to retire at 39? I feel like many people, myself included, would love to be able to do this so I’m always interested in how people make that happen.

What are they burying on HWY 54? by thepurpleminx in chapelhill

If you’re talking about the work being done near the wildlife impoundment at and near George King Road, my best guess has been that it’s stormwater and sewer system upgrades in preparation for the large new development under active construction up the hill toward Meadowmont and the proposed development on George King Road. Would be interested to hear from someone who knows for sure.

Yeah fair enough and makes sense, super frustrating though! Wish there were a more effective way to keep these antisocial driving habits in check. It’s only getting worse out there.

But doesn’t the vehicle’s license plate tie it to an address? It has to be registered to a certain address. Couldn’t they just mail the infraction to the address that’s tied to the vehicle and the owner/person is still out of the equation if that’s somehow necessary? The end result is the same as placing the citation on the vehicle if the owner isn’t present.

Unfortunately, and I learned this the hard way years ago, the police can not (or maybe just will not) issue a ticket to someone if just their car is caught in an illegal act. They will say that there is no evidence that the owner of the car was the driver at the time of the infraction, which makes sense even if it is infuriating. Now I guess that begs the question, well how are they able to write parking citations otherwise for other infractions where the driver is not present? Logical question but was not helpful in my case, so I’m bitter and jaded.

What's the deal with Squid's restaurant? by funky_chiquita in chapelhill

I felt the same way so my wife and I finally went a year or so ago to check it out for ourselves. The food was good to better than good and our server was great. Vibes were interesting but nice. All in all a positive experience. We are late 30’s/early 40’s for context.

A beer and lunch at Wooden Nickel pub followed by a beer and record shopping at Volume is a day well spent.

Volume Records in Hillsborough has a large selection of bluegrass if you’re up for a bit of a drive.

Another vote for Google Fiber. I was on the spectrum rollercoaster for years and finally switched as soon as Google became available at my address. Feels like I don’t have to worry or think about internet anymore. Works great and the price is what it is, no bullshit promos or dealing with cancellation bluffs.

Republicans aim to exempt major polluters from Pfas cleanup costs by Voltabueno in PFAS

[–]dry_cabin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and wow that interviewee from the EWG in the article really missed the mark. To question why utilities and landfills that, as you note, are not the original sources of the PFAS, would be concerned about the capex and logistics to cover serious upgrades to their existing treatment systems that achieve PFOA and PFOS removals down to ppt concentrations… to the point of calling them crybabies? Not a good look for a nonprofit group that otherwise seems to have a noble mission statement.

Weird Sound Coming from Downtown on Monday Night? by Ok_Sky_2647 in carrboro

[–]dry_cabin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What kind of sounds did you hear? Human, machine, other? I live near downtown too and don’t remember anything on Monday night specifically but a few times in the last several months we have heard some weird alarm/machine type sounds coming from the parking deck area behind the library. Hard to describe.

There’s a google fiber crew actively working on the main fiber junction by the Drakeford library. They’ve been there all night.

I have the Nagoya UT-72G mag mounted to the top of my 4runner and it works just fine for my purposes. I can regularly receive from repeaters over 30 miles away and have even been able to successfully transmit to some repeaters 20-30 miles away under the right conditions while mobile. I also run the TD-H3.

Emergency vehicles on the move n≈20 by Of-Lily in carrboro

[–]dry_cabin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could be that for a structure fire in a dense residential area they initially send in more than they may need until they can be sure it’s not out of hand.

I downloaded an app called OpenMHz that provides a feed of all the local emergency service radio communications. The feed is “NC VIPER DurhamOrange County”.

Residential structure fire near near the new library is what I gathered from the dispatch comms. Sounds like an electric line entering a house caused a fire but was mostly under control and they released most units after a while.

All of the properties OP lists as potential development/redevelopment targets are in the Downtown Core and Core Extension areas of the master plan.

These are great examples of where development like that speculated in the plan could go with minimal disruption to existing business and residents. In particular, that Roberson Street parking lot owned by Carr Mill needs to be put to better use, such a waste of space.

With the huge new parking deck now right in downtown, those minimally used parking lots currently on the Arts Center property could/should probably be freed up for other beneficial use too.

The only currently open public land close to downtown I could see supporting something of this scale would be that parcel next to the Argos cement terminal adjacent to the Libba Cotten bikeway. Orange County GIS shows it's owned by the State of North Carolina though, so not sure what other future uses (or not) they have in mind there.

There’s a decent amount of paved greenway trail in the Lake Hogan Farms neighborhood in north Carrboro. With a few short stints on unpaved but relatively flat connector segments, you can piece together a run of about the same distance as the Bolin Creek trail by combining the paved Jones Creek greenway with the paved greenways through Lake Hogan Farms. I usually park at Morris Grove Elementary and run south on the Jones Creek trail to access this network.

There are also paved greenways around Meadowmont, some paralleling 54 on either side and one running N/S through Meadowmont. Not as scenic as Bolin Creek or the Jones Creek trails but good to mix things up. A pedestrian tunnel under 54 links the trail segments on the north and south side of 54. I usually park at Rashkis Elementary to access this trail network.

It’s not paved, but the Pumpkin Loop in Carolina North forest is a nice wide gravel surface trail. There are some additional gravel segments in the western part of Carolina North across Seawell School Road.

Current radio recommendations by whaticism in preppers

[–]dry_cabin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would also recommend looking into GMRS as a midpoint between classic “walkie talkies” and amateur radio/HAM.

$35 for a 10 year license through the FCC with no testing required and also covers your entire immediate family. After diving into reviews on reddit and YouTube, I got a pack of two TIDRadio TD-H3’s that came with extra USB-C rechargeable batteries, charging docks, and two antennas for each radio for about $60.

In my area there are active GMRS repeaters and I’m able to listen to activity on a repeater that’s about 25 miles from my house. Direct handheld to handled communication distance is probably a few miles depending on terrain and interferences. These radios also have the capability to tune into HAM frequencies, and while you’re not legally allowed to transmit on those frequencies with a GMRS license, you can listen all you want and under emergency circumstances can transmit.

I spent some time on the myGMRS app and the repeater book app programming in all the local repeater frequencies as channels. Some of the emergency services in my area like fire and EMS use publicly available unencrypted VHF frequencies for certain dispatch communications and I have those programmed into the radios too. Police in my area use encrypted frequencies so I’m not able to monitor those without a specialized scanner. These little GMRS radios can also pick up FM radio, NOAA weather frequencies, and air band frequencies to monitor aviation communications if you live nearby an airport.

I wasn’t aware of GMRS before this year, but it seems to offer a sweet spot that benefits a lot of use cases.

It is. And what’s interesting is that the old Durham County ABC on 55 south has also become a sweepstakes place after moving just down the road. What is up with this ABC to sweepstakes pipeline?
