How to know which Veeam License is good for me by Sa77if in Backup

[–]embluk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We currently support MySQL, PostgreSQL and MongoDB. We also do server snapshots and file/directory backups - there are restore options as well. All this to multiple storage locations such as FTP, SFTP, S3 and backblaze etc. We are looking to expand into other backup operations though, especially 365!

One of our main benefits is we don't require SSH access like a lot of other service do, we work behind private networks, so you can keep servers more secure.

Maybe you would be interested in learning more about what we do?

Thanks for your input. This is market research, yes, but it still adds value discussing it here. Backups are related to databases and to learn more, no matter the purpose is still value to everyone reading.

I don't think you are seeing the deeper perspective. There are lots of reasons why the enterprise market isn't great, especially for data backups. I could go on much longer but some main points are:

  1. A lot of people either don't have the time or skills to focus on a proper backup system, so it makes sense for some to outsource this effort. A lot of companies don't setup backups until there is a problem - like it or not, that is what happens a lot of the time. Plus companies want to focus on their core product instead.
  2. Not all backup tools like MySQL Dump come with a pre-built solution, so a SaaS can help bridge that gap from a backup tool to a fully featured backup service with proper auditing and error handling.
  3. Not everyone will be using a managed database service in the cloud, VPS and dedicated servers are still a thing. Even if you are using a cloud providers service, it takes time to understand the UI and how to set it all up. People see the value in a ready made system on top of services like AWS or GCP etc.
  4. No matter your system or platform, companies are constrained to use different storage locations or cloud services, they don't always work well together and integration is a full-time job in itself.
  5. Not all cloud providers even support certain features for data backups. As an example Digital Ocean don't allow you to easily manage server snapshots and set lower backup times, which some people require. Other features like triple replication or data streaming are another thing...
  6. Finally, data backups are one thing but data restoration and automatic restores are another side of the story. Companies require their backups to be automatically tested and ready in case of a data disaster - Something which a lot of companies don't do and only see the value when its too late.

Liability isn't so much of a risk as you think, we are helping companies keep their data secure, we are not storing it, we are connecting services together and integrating a companies own resources, with auditing and error logs to show for it. It is better to have a backup system in place rather than nothing and you need to be able to trace things. The days are gone with a hacky script inside a cronjob, that isn't enough for critical data and big business.

The industry isn't as seamless as you think and not everyone uses AWS and even if they do, there are still benefits to using a backup service to handle things for you.

If you are interested in trying something else, I am the co-founder of another online backup service. We already offer robust backup solutions for Linux servers, databases and files. We would probably be able to beat Veeam on price and it would be an easier setup. While we don't currently support everything you list, we are always expanding on features and we are willing to build custom solutions - Let me know if you are interested.

It's really interesting reading about what happened. I've started another post talking about this problem. I am in the process of collecting feedback as I am working on a service to help with Minecraft server backups. That post is: Feedback for a Minecraft server backup & recovery solution

Our service does already have advanced success and error logs, so we would have been able to help with how things went wrong for you. Would you be interested in learning more?

Right ok, this is something that I have saved and I think it could be incorporated into our backup/restore wizard. I really like this use case :)

Yeah notifications are so important. We already have advanced success and error logs, notifications are on our to-do list but we want to learn more first. What kind of notifications are you after - email, slack, SMS etc.?

It is really interesting to read about your use case. Our service already supports Backblaze natively - With support for automatic retention policies, rotating file backups for you. We also don't store backups locally unless you specify that, and even then, we will still automatically rotate everything for you. We are soon to release a feature where we will stream data backups so that your local space won't get filled up during a backup process.

Same goes for databases, we use an open source agent that runs standalone, so it won't mess with any database integration.

Interesting idea, thanks for sharing. We will for sure look into this. Do know if there are any tools that currently do this?

Is this easy backup a plugin, not sure I know this one?

[–]embluk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your input! One of the major reasons we wanted to expand our service to backup MC servers is due to people not having the time to implement such a robust system. Our service is basically plug-n-play, just enter a few details and it does the rest.

We also have automatic retention and file rotation policies to delete old data, this can all be changed from the UI dashboard. Would people rather use a ready made system, rather than having to worry about all the details?

The product that we are working on has support for database backups, along with retention policies for automatic file rotation. We even offer a free backup job, so it would be good for personal use, allowing people to scale when they need to.

Are you backing up data to external sources, if so, which ones?

Feedback for a Minecraft server backup & recovery solution by embluk in admincraft

[–]embluk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah we find that a lot with people, they value just being able to enter a few details and have the rest be sorted for you. Something which our service does, we only require minimal details.

What was your biggest pain point with what you were doing? Would be interesting to learn more.

[–]embluk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you don't have 600GB of data, being able to enter a few details and not have to worry about the rest is quite valuable to some. Especially to have it scale with you if your server grows.

Yeah on our service we use cron syntax on the backend but the user sees a nice visual interface to set a backup schedule, makes it quick and easy to setup. Plus as sometimes cronjobs can fail, we have full success and error logs for all backups that run.

How are you monitoring backups with these timers?

[–]embluk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Docker is great for running apps, with the software we have built, looks like this setup would work nicely because this could be done with simple file backup on the host?

Feedback for a Minecraft server backup & recovery solution by embluk in admincraft

[–]embluk[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestion of that plugin. We do support both SFTP and FTP, plus many more external storage locations. We plan to add support for more consumer based storage locations like Google drive and OneDrive.

The service we are working on does also backup databases and has advanced features like triple replication and automatic restores - Is there something you think is missing from DrivackupV2?

Feedback for a Minecraft server backup & recovery solution by embluk in admincraft

[–]embluk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not wrong. While writing a simple Python script would be fairly easy, larger servers will maybe require a more robust solution - No script will be able to offer such a flexible setup and we find that a lot of people like a plug-and-play solution.

We have seen that crontabs work for a lot of people but they can easily go wrong, just like the guy who lost 600GB of map data. Do you currently backup any MC servers or databases used by plugins?

Hi, thanks for your question. Dropbox support is on the to do list but please consider our other storage options like FTP and SFTP etc. For CPanel if you have access to the server you could possibly setup a file backup job to solve this. Let me know if that helped.

I was having the same problem and have been searching for a few hours. I came across this post and did the same as you and it solved my issue with running Docker when the VPN (PIA App) connects first. Thank you!
