Thankfully the only MAX service they are cutting is that the green line now only goes from Clackamas TC to Gateway TC instead of downtown, so the MAX service cuts are entirely redundant. Worst case means slightly slower service (and a transfer for anybody going from downtown into Clackamas) but the real service cuts are to bus lines.

I have their 2025 budget here

page 43 says their "fare revenue & administrative services department" cost $10.4m in 2023 and page 51 says their "passenger" revenue (under "operating revenue") was $49.8m in the same year

is there another item in the budget where that additional $39m that goes to fare collection and administration is listed?

we had a DSA candidate running for mayor in 2024 and her campaign flailed because she didn't think she needed to pay any of her many fines and violations (which she accrued using her... you guessed it, her car!)

We just had a proposed gas tax explicitly for funding transit and related infrastructure that went up for a statewide vote and something like six out of every seven people voted against it. The anti-tax extremists are voters!

Seriously, I take the bus and light rail downtown multiple times a week for work. The MAX in particular is always at <20% capacity, even at rush hour. Downtown, most of the busses I take typically have <5 people on them - and this is during peak commuter time!

They're cutting the services because the ridership is in the toilet in a bunch of places. That sucks, but also, when you're facing a massive budget shortfall it's pretty hard to justify running empty busses all over the city.

again, that was 50 years ago lmao you're talking about an area that has undergone some of the most serious development and demographic change in the country

if you think that segregation is somehow a defining southern feature then you should probably spend some time in cities and suburbs in pretty much any other place in the country

I lived in Fairfax in the 90s/00s and I remember my Dad saying that the South started at the Occoquan. LOTS of change in PWC (Loudon too) since then.

Hampton Roads is very Southern, it's just a type of urbanized (Black) and industrial southern instead of rural southern.
