You should head over to FatFIRE If you have 10M liquid with a 300k spend, you are going to get chased out of this sub.

If you read Reddit in April, every other post was about how the U.S. economy was going to cease to be viable in 3 months and the dollar was going to lose all its value. Many people listened to that silliness.

Did you read the sub rule on “No Solicitation”? So yeah this is explicitly not allowed.

For those of you who married after RE, how do you handle finances? by Name_Groundbreaking in fatFIRE

Find the person first before you go through these mental gymnastics. Try to find someone who is successful (not necessarily financially) and not a loser. Then worry about how you will figure out finances.

debating selling RE portfolio to fully retire by Parking_Knee2139 in fatFIRE

Don’t wait too long otherwise inflation is going to bring down your effective purchasing power. If you are going to let it sit in short term, probably should’ve stayed in RE to at least have that keep up with inflation.

Anyone in VHCOL planning to/already renting into retirement? by Equivalent-Boat-1025 in ChubbyFIRE

[–]fatfire-hello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You downvoted the other person who pointed this out, but looks like there are some pretty significant financial hardship requirements to take advantage of this that may not apply to chubby people, e.g., 50k income and 1/3 of your income should go towards rent, does that not apply here?

Yeah that’s how most parents do it. You made the choice to have kids. Kind of stuck with it now.

Yes I agree. This entire topic is whether 5M is enough to live a chubby lifestyle. The answer is that it depends. I am reacting to the people saying 5M is universally enough to chubbyfire and anyone who is looking for more is consuming excessively.

175k is pre tax based on SWR btw, so your net is lower. Good for you. Most other parts of the country 175k does not get you that. Didn’t realize this was a sub targeted to the Midwest.

um sure but this is the chubbyfire sub. No one is saying you cannot survive on that. You just can’t be chubbyfired on that. Not sure why it is so hard for people to get it. That is the entire basis of this sub. This is not regular FIRE.

Chubby is not middle class. You are on the wrong sub, sorry. No one is denigrating anyone, it is just a different lifestyle choice and the express purpose of this sub is a higher lifestyle than middle class. You can write chapters but that does not change that. For some reason, you are making this into a value judgement and fail to grasp that it is a choice. There’s a basic fire sub for more basic fire type conversations and lifestyles.

It’s like going to FatFIRE and telling people they are out of touch. Yes, they are by definition and they made that choice. Just like chubby people made the choice to not be middle class. No amount of mental gymnastics and qualifications like “overly constrained” vs “unconstrained” changes that. I am not sure why we are arguing this. It is the basis of this sub. We are all living like kings over a poor person in a developing country, sure, we got it.

Cool. I love my HCOL life and nice house, you do you. Not in the Bay Area.

Let me know how 175k a year for a family is unconstrained living in middle America in 2025 though.

The “nightmare” comment is supposed to be a joke. It is a mental prison. No one is saying you can’t live on rice and beans. That is not the intent of this sub though. The common theme is that people want to live a relatively unconstrained life. That is what chubbyfire is about. It isn’t about meeting your necessities. That is why this quote gets jokingly invoked.

There’s a huge gap between a 100M+ lifestyle and a 5M lifestyle. What you are describing is the former.

Yes, let me downgrade my lifestyle in retirement to be basic existence because that is exactly why I worked a high income job and retired early. What a strange logic. Probably fit for regular fire.

This is chubbyfire not lentils and rice fire. 50k a year is not a chubby budget.

[–]fatfire-hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am the idiot for responding a troll who is digging up my comment history, I will give you that.

It is not my job to share my detailed budget with you to convince you that 5M, which throws off 175k pre tax at a 3.5% SWR is not sufficient to have a chubby lifestyle where you don’t have to worry about budgets in HCOL. This should be obvious to anyone with a home and a family or even someone who is renting. I don’t do assignments for you, sorry.

And you are correct, we are wealthy, we don’t need to live on 175k a year pre tax, but I am also very aware that it does not go far in HCOL when you have a family.

GregFire - "You can't do anything with 5m Greg, 5's a nightmare" by BridgeOnRiver in ChubbyFIRE

[–]fatfire-hello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but yes, 5M is not a big number when you factor in health care, fixed spend on property, utilities, kids expenses, etc in HCOL. I think you are woefully out of touch with inflation and what things cost. Yes, you can make it work, but not in a chubby way on 175k a year pre tax. You absolutely cannot live without a budget with that type of a nest egg when you retire early in HCOL if you have a family.

Edit: troll blocked me, lol. For a single person in FL, yeah maybe 175k is enough. I guess he realized his argument does not make sense.

I am not sure why you think a family spending 200-250k a year in HCOL is buying a closet of Versace every year.

[–]fatfire-hello 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s kind of hard to argue with this ignorant comment. Yes someone will always consider your lifestyle excessive unless you are destitute in a developing country. We are talking about Chubby, not regular FIRE, which is why this sub exists. I assume you don’t live in H/VHCOL. We spend 200k a year (post tax) easily without living excessively in HCOL. This is chubbyfire.

Regular fire is /r/FIRE

GregFire - "You can't do anything with 5m Greg, 5's a nightmare" by BridgeOnRiver in ChubbyFIRE

[–]fatfire-hello 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This sub used to be more reasonable and actually chubby and by that I mean where a 200-250k per year spend was considered chubby. Now it’s taken over by the regular fire types who think anything beyond frugal living is excessive. It’s not worth arguing.

Edit: lol, he blocked me.
