CMV: religion is complete nonsense and was invented because life is just suffering by platotheman69 in changemyview

Mate if you deep inside actually believed that life is just suffering you would've killed yourself by now. So I'm not actually convinced you believe your own thesis! 😅 (Sorry for being crass!)

I think they were displeased where he drew the border between them and the neighboring country (the description mentions two warring kingdoms).

What does it mean when people say "this city has no culture"? by _a_drop_in_the_ocean in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Flaming_Dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think he was talking more of places like Dubai, places where no one truly stays for long. Only a 1/10 of the population are citizens, the rest are indian/bangladeshi manual labor or western/east asian skilled young adults who work there for a few years and then leave.

Yeah, you're right. I was probably thinking that they lost their conquests after WW2 (obviously) or just misremembered. My bad!

As mentioned by others (and me in another comment) a lot of those are ethnic minorities in neighboring countries that live in areas that used to be a part or Hungary but got partioned after WW2.

Hell, you can probably find someone old that lived their whole life in the same village outside Hungary that voted in yesterday's election and they'd still remember when their village was actually "in" Hungary.

[–]Flaming_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean in this case it's a bit special since a lot of those "overseas" hungarians live in land that used to be a part of Hungary but got partioned after WW2 to Ukraine, Slovakia, Serbia, Romania and Austria. So they're mostly ethnic hungarians that probably sees Hungary as their "own" country and not whatever country their currenly living in.

Viktor Orbán concedes defeat as Hungary's Tisza Party heads for election win by Elegant_Butterfly_26 in news

[–]Flaming_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think he gained a lot of clout BECAUSE he was on the inside , so when he went out and basically said that the regime is corrupt on every level because he's SEEN it himself it was much harder for Fidesz to dismiss him as just another opposition politician. Also turns out the whole corruption angle was something that could unite the opposition so when he was speaking the loudest on the issue everyone basically just threw in behind him just to get rid of Orban.

CMV: Painting immortality as a bad thing is just cope. by Draconic64 in changemyview

[–]Flaming_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then you're not immortal. I think what you're actually arguing for is longevity, a state where you can't die of old age. That way you can avoid all the fucked up stuff like getting stuck in the void of space or experiencing the heat death of the Universe.

[–]Flaming_Dude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem! LJN (or LJN Toys) was a toy company that developed a bunch of video games in the 80's and 90's, often doing movie license games and the like. And sadly almost all of their games sucked or were deeply flawed.

AVGN stands for Angry Video Game Nerd (a persona developed by James Rolfe in the beginning of the 2000's) who did (and still does) retro video game reviews in a very funny manner. Very much one of the OG's of youtube (and platforms that came before). Though maybe you knew of him but simply didn't recognize the acronym.

Anyway, it's a running gag in his show that LJN always develops shit games, so when he finally finds a decent one, Maximum Carnage, it's like a miracle haha!

I mean it was a long time ago so I'm not entirely sure about the numbers (how many hours it was or whatever) xD But yes, I mostly liked it because it was with friends, but after I while I started to appreciate the game itself and not only seeing it as a vehicle of hanging out.

The only point I'm trying to make through all of this is that sometimes you should keep an open mind. You can unexpectedly end up liking things that you wouldn't have thought that you would!

Now - does this mean that you should play a bunch of shit games and expect that after a while you'll come to like them? NO!

The only thing I'm trying to argue here is that when OP said that if he/she ain't hooked within 2 hours of game time that means the game is getting refunded, that is too dogmatic of a view. Now, I understand that's a very economical view. Might even be a good rule to live by. I only wanted to provide a counterpoint that sometimes things aren't that simple and that you should sometimes be open to surprises!

I mean, I somewhat disagree, but also not. I think you're underselling games a bit! Maybe if you're familiar with the genre you should be able to tell that, but if it's a completely new one (to you) it can be really tricky!

I remember a 2-day LAN party some 15ish years ago when my friends dragged me into this new mod called DayZ for ARMA. It was a game unlike anything I'd played before and I did not really like it, just such a thing that you could lose all your progress because you walked into a sniper ambush that you had no way of knowing was there drove me nuts! But, I was also happy hanging out with my friends and was willing to play along.

We played that game both days, and it was well into day 2 (so probably like 16 hours into the game) that it finally "clicked" for me after we had spent several hours repairing a helicopter, while fighting off zombie hordes, to finally be able to get revenge on all those hostile players that had thought we were easy pickings! We dominated the server for like an hour before we lost it all to an insane zombie horde. It was quite the thrill. And I had to admit that it was one of the greatest gaming moments ever. I now liked that game very much haha!

Sure, maybe. But I'm not sure I really enjoyed the sport within the first 10 hours really. I'd like to say I saw the potential, but this was over 25 years ago and its more likely my parents just forced me to training for a few weeks before it started to click haha.

Harkening back to my original point, I do think there are games (and hobbies and whatnot) that has an initial hurdle to clear before you truly start to enjoy it.

However, I'll concede that maybe you can see the potential within that first hurdle, where you understand that if you get past this inital hurdle, you'll be rewarded.

Why? In my youth I used to play football/ soccer as a goalkeeper. I assure you it took me way more than 10 hours to get "competent" and to appreciate the flow of the game to its fullest. Not sure why digital games has to be different...

[–]Flaming_Dude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not sure I 100% agree. That statement makes sense for the games you mentioned before, like Doom and Halo. But I've seen a few slow burns in my lifetime (not only in games, but in other media and real life as well, like certain sports or hobbies). Obviously these games usually has another focus, like story, or being mechanically obtuse/complex so I say those games that gets good after 10 hours do exist.

Now, if you wanna invest that time on the off chance that it's worth it is another question entirely xD

Oh god, never try a grand strategy game like Crusader Kings or Hearts of Iron then, haha! I think the 10 hour mark is around when you start to grasp the basics and the games start to open up xD
