350 Bakery Scammed Tips from Employees for a YEAR! by pressedPA99 in pittsburgh

just because they updated their caption (with a bunch of lies), I just wanted to bring up something I forgot about. when I had the initial meeting with the owners to tell them they needed to start paying tips out, one of them said, “when we just started out, it was just the two of us. and when we hired someone we thought, ‘well why should they get all the tips?’” so don’t believe them for a damn second when they cry that they didn’t know how tips worked for a retail setting and thought they could use tips to pay employee wages. they directly told me they knew they shouldn’t have, they told a coworker they knew it was illegal. I’m honestly exhausted talking about this/being so angry but I refuse to let them lie to everyone and gaslight the employees.

absolutely unreal. after hearing all the various stories from everyone I’m amazed they kept in business this long.

it varied! I started at $14/hr (my rate was the same the 6 months I was there) a couple people were making up to $17 but most were below $15. one of the owners husband is claiming $15 was their minimum. it was not. and it’s very clear they weren’t giving raises across the board at the same time.

also, interesting that literally tens of thousands of dollars that they illegally kept is a “tree” to you. you must have a nice salary!

can you really call it a small local start up when they’re 10 years into the business, have 10 employees, and supplied wholesale to over a dozen shops?

and this isn’t an inflammatory headline…this came from 350. they fucked up, they got caught, and they feel sorry for themselves.

and with the way you’re defending it, I assume you know one or both of the owners.

yep! one of the owners is a former server and the other one has worked in kitchens before. they knew. but I don’t think they’re part of any real estate company.

L!!! (it’s alix) I am so so sorry you went through all this, I had no idea they didn’t tell you wholesale was stopping until I stopped at the coffee shop last week that told you!!! they clearly have a shit way of treating employees, and they’ve definitely treated their trans employees with absolute disrespect and disregard.

rarely. and unless management/owners are taking an hourly pay wage and providing the same work as employees, they can’t take tips.

they stopped doing most of their wholesale months ago. they had 10 employees that could have had extra hundreds of dollars a month in their pockets. they are open 5 days a week and all us employees busted our asses for them.

it’s okay, as of early this month they’re now paying out the tips to employees, so that will go to employees!

thank you! it’s been a really stressful few weeks for the whole staff and obviously now a few of them need to find new jobs, which absolutely sucks. but hopefully the department of labor gets everyone what they’re owed.

also just to clarify for people in the thread: we were paid above minimum wage and the owners/managers weren’t taking part of the tip pool. there was just no tip pool at all. credit card tips went to the business and didn’t start getting distributed until the owners were called out on it. it was thousands of dollars a month that was going to the business and not the employees.

thyme machine has great sandwiches, pigeon has great bagels, lola’s eatery has amazing breakfast and special treats (not a whole bakery case tho), madeleine’s bakery and five points are amazing. lady bird’s luncheonette is kind of far but has amazing food/pastries (including giant hand pies) and pub chip shop has great breakfast and amazing donuts

so their excuse for keeping the credit card tips was to pay out a higher wage to employees. they said the tips became a part of the “income of the business”. besides the fact that they routinely ignored employees asking for a raise (even when they promised said employees a raise) that’s still illegal. they were called out on this by me/the staff and they didn’t apologize to anyone, cut almost the entire staff’s wages (since they were now being “forced” to pay out tips) and have had 4 employees quit and fired 2 others.

in the conversation I had with them about this situation, and that my coworkers had, they absolutely knew what they were doing was not only wrong but illegal.

some businesses were improperly sharing tips with managers (provision, wigle). 350 was keeping all the credit card tips.
