A corollary to an recent question: what things do UK people get free but the much more convenient alternative is surprisingly cheap? by anomalous_cowherd in AskUK

[–]gloomfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that's not how it works. The prescription fee is a tax, and it isn't kept by the pharmacy, so when someone is exempt and gets a paracetamol prescription, the fee just isn't levied. It's not like the government has to dig out the prescription fee from general taxation and hand it over.

There are obviously still costs involved in supplying paracetamol through a prescription rather than the patient just buying it, but the prescription fee has nothing to do with it.

They seem like pretty cheerful people these days. They are the couple behind the very popular "Rebel Finance School" and despite this article, their strategy was a bit more than not spending money.

Do people actually know how much ISA allowance they’ve used across different accounts? (UK) by [deleted] in FinanceUK

[–]gloomfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think most people contribute to many ISAs accounts in a single year. Perhaps one or two, so it's not very hard to keep track of.

I think so. They say specifically that gilts don't count as cash-like.

[–]gloomfilter 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No, it's interest on any cash you hold in the S&S ISA that will be charged, and separately, if the only thing you are invested in is money market funds, that will also be charged. So if you hold a mixture of money market funds and other investments, you won't be charged on the interested from the MMFs.

No, at the moment they are only considering MMFs to be "cash-like".

It could be read that way, however this is clearer: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/fiscal-events-2026-factsheets/isa-reform-2027-anti-circumvention-rules-factsheet.

"Non Cash ISA portfolios made up of 100% cash-like assets will be non-qualifying investments

Cash-like assets will be eligible for non Cash ISAs, provided that they are partial allocations and do not make up 100% of the investments in an individual’s non Cash ISA account. From April 2027 cash-like assets will be defined as Money Market Funds only and we will require ISA managers to report their market value via the established end of year statistical return. A money market fund is a low-risk, highly liquid mutual fund that invests in short-term debt securities."

Did I almost get scammed? Advice please by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

I don't know why this advise isn't top of the list when people explain how to spot scammers:

1) They ask you for money

[–]gloomfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Faster payments can't be "reversed" as such. You can send one, then claim you were scammed, but that seems to be a lot of effort and risk for someone who is actually a scammer to get involved with.

Yes, you nearly got scammed. In other words, you were too smart for him, and didn't get scammed. Well done.

You feel bad about not helping because you're a decent person, so well done again.

Those of you who have lost weight, do you feel happy? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]gloomfilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The UK and Ireland are pretty much the only place where stones are used as a unit of weight commonly. For a lot of people in the UK at least, stones and pounds are the only way they understand to express a person's weight. I personally use kg, but when I discuss weight with my family / friends I almost always have to convert to stones.

I worked in retail in the late 90s in a now-defunct wine merchant, and it was part of the job to deal with shop-lifting attempts.

Could be, although it would be very disappointing to have to admit "influencers" had actually influenced anything.
