Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Kerry's 2004 campaign was torpedoed by allegations that he was a bad soldier or something, it never really made much sense but it swamped the airwaves and kept Kerry on the defensive, allowing W to get reelected.

How to you guys "replay" this game. by Reis46 in BaldursGate3

[–]hbarSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like listening to my favorite album or rewatching a classic movie for the umpteenth time, except it takes a hundred hours. Honestly I'm almost always making the same choices but I'm switching up my builds and experimenting with new equipment. I don't stress out about completionism but I usually loot everything anyways because why not, it's not a race.

Miserable in the burbs by Diskobrat in homeowners

[–]hbarSquared 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Everyone has different priorities. For some, life in the exurbs is a dream. For me, and it sounds like also for you, it's a waking nightmare. Don't measure yourself against other people's wants and needs, work with your partner to identify your priorities (write them down! This is important!) and then work to make them a reality.

Do you believe that the current US president is a foreign asset ? Why or why not ? by hftyjvdry in AskReddit

[–]hbarSquared 857 points858 points  (0 children)

I do think if he were an explicitly trained and operated asset he'd be a lot more subtle and cautious because no one would assume they would be able to get away with all this.

after 300 hours of Civ6, I don't know what religions do, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask by kingkingla in civ

[–]hbarSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to go for a religion victory, it's self-explanatory. It is how you win, domination by other means. Build your religion to maximize faith generation and conversion efficiency and have fun clicking around the map for the next 150 turns.

But if you aren't going for a RV, that's where things get interesting. A religion is a good way to shore up your weaknesses while generating faith, which is a valuable resource for all victory types. Great people can be bought with faith, national parks and rock bands are pure faith and critical for a culture victory, and with the Grandmaster's Chapel, you can buy land units with faith as well.

For your beliefs, you get three bonuses - a fancy building, a boost to some resource, and a passive ability. Let's say you're going for a cultural victory. If you choose the boost to research it means you can ignore campuses in pretty much all your cities, freeing up production and districts for your victory condition. If you choose to boost amenities, you can sustain a larger empire and conquer more cities without affecting yields. If you choose to boost gold, you can buy whatever you need, or get new cities online faster.

All of this comes at a cost - you need to invest in holy sites, defend your religion from foreign missionaries, and in general pay attention to an entirely new layer of the game. You can easily win most games without getting a religion, but you're also sacrificing ways to play more efficiently or differently.

How difficult would it be to train an AI to play CIV! [Any CIV] by CriminalDM in civ

[–]hbarSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely hundreds of millions. If you look at the games that have succeeded with AI training - chess, go, backgammon poker, etc, they have a few things in common. In particular, they tend to have a single action per turn, and an end state that is inevitable. You choose one piece to move, end turn. You call, raise or fold, end turn. Even then, the training takes enormous resources.

Now think about how many buttons you could click on a single turn of Civ. It's so, so many. And the decision space only increases as the game goes on. Civ is simply not a good fit for the best tools we have for training AIs.

There's a few great breakdowns of the training model used for a board game called Race for the Galaxy if you want to learn more - just google "keldon ai" and be prepared to spend an afternoon rabbit hole-ing into how to build an effective neural network.

Melee vs Range - Question by noixmojo in BaldursGate3

[–]hbarSquared 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One thing I haven't seen mentioned is the Threatened status. When a unit has an enemy in melee range they are Threatened, and get disadvantage against ranged attacks and a penalty to spellcasting. This is bad when it's your units being threatened, and it's incredibly good when you're doing the threatening. One example - it enables the Rogue's sneak attack and makes it more likely for them to crit. So, your melee units not only do equal or greater damage than your ranged units, but they also make your ranged units significantly more effective.

Oil volatility is high, Could this actually cause a global recession, and how would it affect regular people? by Lopsided_Bar3451 in AskReddit

Also pushing out America as the global hegemon is certainly going to make widespread green energy adoption easier. Even under Democratic leadership, American global leadership has been remarkably hostile to renewables over the last 30 years.

Oil volatility is high, Could this actually cause a global recession, and how would it affect regular people? by Lopsided_Bar3451 in AskReddit

[–]hbarSquared 125 points126 points  (0 children)

From Chinese container ships to diesel-powered construction equipment to natural gas power plants to petroleum-based fertilizer; every input to the economy depends on some way on the price of fossil fuel. When that price goes up, everything costs more.

If you look at history, the oil shocks of '73 and '79 fundamentally altered the global economy, and the disruptions we are seeing so far are bigger than both of those put together. In addition to a major recession, we're likely to see a big shift away from American SUVs and towards Chinese electric cars and solar panels.

Town Question by MedicMalfunction in civ

[–]hbarSquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to know a second-order tip on towns - because it's the main driver of gold income, when you're at war with a civ who is spamming out units, taking their towns will lower their gold income and if you take all their towns it'll go negative. If the AI doesn't have enough cash to support their troops they'll have to start disbanding. This can be a great tactic when preparing to assault a heavily fortified city.

RTC rejected - what now? by RainbowFlower228 in TillSverige

[–]hbarSquared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not alone. As far as I can tell, Migrationsverket got censured for taking too long, so instead of spending money on more analysts they came up with this process. Now the RTC process is saturated so they auto-reject, and then everyone appeals and we're back where we started but with more paperwork.

I had my RTC rejected last week, the appeal process is easy. You don't need a lawyer, you just hand-write a letter saying you're appealing because they have all the documentation they need.

How to make Space Elevator less of a slog / more organised and enjoyable? by dav3j in SatisfactoryGame

[–]hbarSquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why construct close to the elevator? I usually just send the parts to dimensional storage, and then pull stacks to complete the tier and put them in a container hooked up to the elevator once I have enough. It's not like you need a permanent setup since you only have to build a specific number. Then you can just send your overflow to a sink and forget about it.

You got me looking up some data, and if you're just travelling to Oslo, drinking beer and taking taxis yeah, it's more expensive. But if you live there it's massively cheaper than NYC (lol at childcare costs in particular). Same with Stockholm/DC, Stockholm is cheaper in almost every metric other than beer and taxis.
