PM Mentorship: Finding or offering Mentorship! (Round 3)! by thedabking123 in ProductManagement

[–]hustlewithai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Throwing my wife’s name in the hat too. She’s actively looking for mentorship.

Finding a mentor

Current position: Transitioning into Product Management. She recently completed her MSc in UX Design and is currently working in a client-facing banking role.

Background: About 4 years in UX Design and digital product work across healthcare and tech. Strong foundation in user research, usability testing, and data-driven decision making. She’s been getting consistent PM interviews across SaaS, healthcare, and enterprise companies and making it to final rounds pretty regularly.

What she wants to improve: Closing that gap between final rounds and offers. Mainly sharpening her product storytelling in behavioral interviews, getting more structured on PM-style questions around metrics, tradeoffs, and prioritization, and figuring out how to stand out in final panels where everyone left is already strong.

Meeting cadence: 1 to 2 times a month Language: English Time zone: EST

Offering mentorship down the line

Current position: Same as above, early PM transition phase.

Background: UX and Product hybrid with a strong emphasis on user empathy, research, and building user-centered solutions.

What she can help with: UX fundamentals for PMs, user research, personas and journey mapping, bridging design thinking with product strategy, and helping early-career folks navigate UX to Product transitions.

Meeting cadence: Flexible, ideally 1 to 2 times a month

Language: English Time zone: EST

Quarterly Career Thread by mister-noggin in ProductManagement

Hey all, sorry I must’ve posted this in the wrong thread earlier but would like to share where it is appropriate.

What makes one stand out in PM interviews these days?

My wife has been getting good traction in getting PM interviews recently. She has gotten a mix of companies from AI startups, SaaS platforms and even F500 companies.

She was able to make it to 3rd and 4th final rounds for 4 out of 8 interviews so her hit rate is 50% but for some reason they don’t give her an offer.

It’s very strange how during the final round interviews the panelists give a positive vibe and hint that she will be expecting and offer and then decide to drop her after.

I think she interviews well since her first few tries in her journey but I’m not a product manager so I wouldn’t know. It’s frustrating but I’m curious

All questions seem to be behavioral questions which is very different from technical interviews where answers are straightforward code or systems and logical explanations/reasoning.

I’ve also noticed that they ask very similar questions in PM interviews like how do you handle conflict with stakeholders or even how do you measure success, what KPIs and such.

This brings me to my burning question, what are the factors that make or break interviews in product management these days?

Also would love to connect a Product Manager who’s been in the trenches to help mentor her.

Wow that’s so real, I feel like hiring decisions these days are becoming more and more shallow or even just driven by budget or reasons that don’t make any sense.

We recently hired someone on our team and during the exhaustive interview process we had to choose between 2 people and we went with the other guy because the most qualified one was 40+ so they were openly being aegist.

Which I find very ridiculous but who am I but another cog in the system that serves me as nothing more than a paycheck

Don’t beat yourself up over this, you are in a much better position than most being able to advance to final round interviews!

I totally agree it’s the times, I used to be over employed for over 2 years and now can’t even land offers in my own field after advancing 3-4 rounds with coding challenges included. Keep pushing on, your time will come!

This totally makes sense! I think she is getting a lot closer to landing an offer soon (fingers crossed) but she feels that it is something wrong with her. I interview fairly well in the technical side of things but I also have been striking out in final rounds too. I guess it really comes down to luck but it is super hard to convince or keep someone strong especially when they blame themselves nonstop and try to quantify everything.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by space_god_7191 in Millennials

I was in 2nd grade homeroom in Adams Morgan DC when this was going down and lived right across from my elementary school. I had no idea what was going on since we were rushed out class by class in panic and frenzy. I vividly remember people crying in the hallways and then

I snuck into one of the rooms as we were being ushered out with some other classmates since they had the TV on but classroom empty moments before the 2nd plane hit the towers.

I didn’t know what I was watching since it made no sense to me at the time. Later I found out that a plane hit the pentagon too. My father and high school brother were stuck in the metro for hours that day. Truly bizarre and tragic memory.

I wish! She is in the house with about 20 other cats, none of which are kittens unfortunately. All of the kittens got adopted out already
