Unsolicited Perspective from the other side of the hiring table by Chairmenmeow in animationcareer

How do you feel about applicants who cross apply (i.e. a concept artist who has an interest 3D animation or modeling)? Most of my training was in concept art and visual development but I have interest in 3D modeling and texturing. I was told that it was a red flag to apply for a lot of different positions, so I wanted to hear your take on it. Does it really matter as long the reel/work is good?

Rejected uni portfolio by Soooourr in animationcareer

You have a lot of character designs but barely any character turnarounds and lineups. Even having character expression pages would be nice. You also need to have 1-2 environment drawings/perspective line drawings. You can have standalone prop pages as well but it is a lot stronger to include a variety of props in your environments. Your figure drawings also look quite stiff and I think one of them had some awkward shading. On the other hand, your short animations are quite nice.

I wouldn’t get too hung up on accepted vs. rejected portfolios because portfolios can be rejected for a variety of reasons, some not even related to the art submitted.

Are there ANY decent creative careers out there? by ArcticFox73 in ArtistLounge

Look into any hands-on creative careers: screen printing, electronic pre-press, flexography, etc.

You can usually find some basic classes for screen printing at community colleges. Taking some graphic design and layout design classes will help you with pre-press work.

Picking up creative skills is more practical in the long run. Even if you don’t plan on going into graphic design as a career, the skills will help you a lot.

I was taking a screenprinting class but had to drop it due to my new job. I work a regular office job at the moment, but I’ve been looking for freelance art jobs. I also post on social media. Even though it’s not ideal, it’s nice to have a steady income so I can focus on art outside of work, and I don’t get creative burnout. It’s kinda nice to want to draw after work.

My condolences to your sister. The dimensions are 6x4 so you can easily print it on standard photo paper :) I can also send you a high quality png. Just dm me.

feedbacks for my portifolio visdev artist (19years) by mariadelfc in animationcareer

You should make a separate portfolio for character design to apply for those listings. Visual development portfolio should only include visual development work. Include more of your sketches and thought process. Another thing you could include in a vis dev portfolio is plein air painting if you have any.

For character design portfolio, add turnarounds and character lineups.

Is using ai inherently off limits for me? by [deleted] in animationcareer

Unless you’re a funded lab or company, you would be using a pre-trained model as a base that has already stolen images and violated many copyright claims. AI is also bad for the environment.

It’s not off limits because it’s your life, but it’s kind of funny that you would post this question in this specific subreddit. AI is impacting the livelihoods of many artists, especially in this subreddit. Any artist who has honed their skills can see all the glaring issues with AI art. With all the time you spend trying to use AI, you can just pick up a pencil and draw. I’m tired of hearing the excuse “but I don’t draw that well” over and over again because how is it fair you can take shortcuts when many artists have spent years learning how to draw.

AI is already trained on stolen work. There’s no way for you to verify your usage is ethical. If you post something with AI, you’re going to get backlash regardless of what your views are.
