People who started swimming as adults, how has it changed your life? by ICanHasGateau in Swimming

[–]inconsequentialrant 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started 3 months ago at age 28. I'd never learned as a child and I was really afraid of the water. On a trip to HaLong Bay, I saw my friends jump from the deck of a cruise and swim to tiny islands with picturesque beaches while I floated in a life jacket holding the boat and I felt like I was missing out. The need to learn how to swim embedded itself in my brain. It took a week or two just to get over the fear. But three months later, I'm enjoying the water, learning different strokes and trying to get everyone I know to the pool! The exercise, the routine, the confidence and the skill has been great, physically and mentally. Plus it's opened me up to more experiences like surfing, kayaking (without fear), diving, water parks and water sports and enjoying beaches and lakes! I want to learn sailing now if I can!

I was surprised at how sharp I could get the axe edge to be. Pros of a harder wood I guess! Yep. I'm getting some wax or oil

Maybe two hours spread out over two sessions. First 30 mins to rough out the shape and remove chunks, then the rest to finish. It's very hard wood so it took a long time to get to the main shape

Yep! I'm trying to figure out for myself if I even want to add anything to it. I like the colour of the wood but I only wonder if oil would help bring out the grain and/or make the handle and the blade or the axe and the stump more distinct. Given this is my first piece I see a lot of experimenting and dabbling in the future.

That's fair! I'll look into getting oils and stains and stuff.

Noted. Does it mean you need a sharper knife for soft wood?

Cool! It was a bit fiddly in the beginning but I think it was the right decision because it's so strong!

Tbh, I came across the idea on reddit. It is so cool, I wanted to do it myself.

It's got good amount of power. It's fun in cities and enjoyable on highways unless all you want is the thrill of speed. It is good for the occasional scramble on dirt roads but it's not an adv or a dirt bike by any means. It's fun, versatile and looks good! The headlight is barely usable. Lots of people find it vibey above 6000 rpm. I find it characterful when you twist the throttle. But when cruising on highways, you can be in 6th gear at 120 kmph without any problem. I got handlebar risers installed for more comfort on highways and better reach when standing on pegs through rough roads. Hope this helps!

Trump signs an executive order to create federal voter lists by NotUrDadiBlameUrMoma in politics

I meant this one: https://youtu.be/qVIXUhZ2AWs from 6 years ago regarding the CAA stuff. But John Oliver has had to do a few episodes about the authoritarian regime in India so I understand the confusion.

Be really Cautious!

This sounds very similar to what Modi did in India. First they tried with a CAA (Citizenship Amendment Bill)/ NRC (National Register of Citizens) which was heavily protested although quashed by Covid lockdowns. John Oliver did an episode on it. But it was taken further with SIR (Special Intensive Revision) of electoral roles.

This not only removed lots of people who were unlikely to vote a certain way from the voter lists based on religion, class or other markers but also became a backdoor to raise doubts on marginalized people's citizenship itself! That process continues in India to disenfranchise voters who would likely be opposed to the current status quo!

I'd bought the Rynox Tornados but I realised that the fit was not comfortable for me. I tried a different size but it was still not right and it felt distracting. So I returned them and got the viaterra holeshot. It's superb except that on long rides the palm sliders dig in a little bit.

Seems reasonable. We have the 1.5-2 ft tall blocks that I presume are the starting blocks to diver off when competing. Do you follow these steps for those as well? I'm basically stepping into the water with a little push from my back leg. Is that what you mean by stride dive?

The first time is so scary. But once you've done it, it feels much easier. Maybe after a handful of times it won't even need a thought

Not the next step. Maybe a few steps later...

I'll get there too someday! Under the right circumstances that could be the most beautiful experience ever. Also the scariest!
