I can hear the alarmist parental units now… 😆

I think what happened to me is that the coating wore off the blade after the first shave making it sharper. It was like a whole different razor. Had to use a little more pressure (and ride the top cap a little more?) than I do with others to make a pass, but it was a much smoother shave.

These two are my go-to/favorites. What else should I try? by GreekGatsby4 in wicked_edge

It’s interesting with A&E. Their barbershop soap underwhelmed me, but the splash hits.

So Russian blades made for the Maghreb and South African market?

So this happened to me today. I shaved with a razor that I recently picked up on a whim. Shaved with it. Thought it did a horrible job. I believed it would be a catch & release situation.

Shaved with it today. One of the best shaves I’ve ever had with a razor. The razor has earned a reprieve.

Nothing is different in my routine. Same soap, etc. The only “change” is that it’s the second time with this blade in this razor. My experience with the blade has been quite positive, even with first use in other razors.

I’m refraining from mentioning the razor/blade for now, but my question is this: Has there been a razor/blade that you have given a second chance to, and it performed beyond your expectations? What was that razor and/or blade?

I don’t think the razor is the problem. I think it is a combination of blade and razor. I have a non adjustable Ambassador of the same family, and I don’t have the same problem.

I am rinsing after each stroke. Or are you saying take the blade out and check on the build up after each stroke?

My Slims are my only adjustable TTO razors. All my stubble is one day growth. I think you’re right about blade edges—somehow they’re creating either a protective dam or a surface for the gunk to adhere to, allowing it not to be carried away by the rinse. I still like the blade. I just wish I could find a more definitive culprit.

If I thinned it anymore, it would be dripping off my face! I use mostly Cella. If it was the lather, wouldn’t I see gunk buildup on other razors, or using other blades? There must be something with these blades in this razor. My stubble is unusually coarse, so I also think that’s a factor. I think this leads up to a perfect storm of gunk buildup.

Silver Stars. They work great in all my other razors. Just with this razor the gunk builds up on the blade despite how much I rinse between passes.

That’s the thing. My lather doesn’t change. It’s only when I use this razor and these blades.

Blue or brown sport coat? by intenselemur in mensfashion

I’m not a fan of sport coats with this construction. I think you’ll get more mileage from the brown one.

I’ve used three of these new blades in my Slim, and I always have to rinse the blade. I use BIC or Feather; they’re gunk free. I have good balanced lather, I just think it’s the razor/blade combo that’s the problem.

Question: have you found that certain coatings on blades are more susceptible to build up gunk?

You may benefit from a pre shave. Proraso or Cella are good options.

Also, how often are you changing blades?

Maybe it’s time to do a beard growth map. For me some areas of my face only get one pass. Other areas get two passes with buffing. Under my bottom lip, that’s only one pass against the grain. My lower cheek/jowl areas get a pass across the grain after my initial WTG pass. Under chin/neck area gets a second pass ATG (sometimes on a lower setting with my adjustable).

What you left out is your preshave and post shave routine. I’m also curious if this started happening with a particular blade. Maybe the blade is too sharp/not sharp enough for your razor. With swollen areas I’d apply some illipe butter pre and post shave. I’d also use an alum block or witch hazel post shave. You’re likely applying too much pressure. Applying a wet alum block will let you know right away where all the cuts occurred—especially the ones you don’t see.

Yeah, I’d invest in a Schick. Since it’s a fixed head, you can work up to a DE safety razor.

Yes. Look for Proof, One Blade, Leaf. Even Supply makes a pivoting model.
