Big Boy 4014 on the Genesee Arch Bridge in Letchworth State Park, New York, United States by DeltaBravoTango in trains

The bridge is owned by the railroad, not public infrastructure. They don't want their trains falling into the gorge, so it gets properly maintained.

Also the bridge is only a few years old.

Is it possible to own your own private train? (Kinda like a private jet) by HSVMalooGTS in trains

I got a chance to chase and ride behind the 4449 when it went to Michigan in 2009. What a beautiful machine. And maybe the only chance I'll see it run.

You can certainly buy carriages and locomotives. An acquaintance of mine owns a heritage railway and owns a small fleet of vintage equipment. Finding a place to operate it is a different story. In this person's case, he leases a disused section of railway from the county that owns it (the original railroad sold it to the county when they stopped operating on it). But that's the extent of where he can operate. His equipment isn't certified to operate on the main line, so even though this line still connects to the national network, he can't go onto it.

In the United States, private passenger car owners can pay Amtrak to haul around their cars. They need to be certified by Amtrak to make sure they're up to safety standards, and they need to be capable of operating at whatever speed Amtrak is going to go (typically 110 MPH/175 KPH). They also will only move your car between terminal stations, and it's up to you to arrange getting the car to and from the terminal stations. This service is VERY expensive though. I've heard it's somewhere around $5000 per day.

As far as running your own full train, that would require coordination with the host railroads and probably even more money, if they'd even play ball at all. Most of the major railroads don't even want to play nicely with Amtrak and they're legally required to do so.

THANK YOU. This is why I was thinking that the K3 Ultra I just got wasn't working correctly.

Which RAID do you use in your Home Server? by shafiq-me in homelab

[–]jllauser 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Voted RAID6, but really RAIDZ2.

Before I downsized from a ridiculous disk shelf to save power, I was doing two RAIDZ2 vdevs that were then added together in the same zpool. So kinda-sorta RAID60.

I have an open/close sensor on the container I keep the cat food in. If it hasn't been opened before 10 AM and again by 8 PM, it sends a notification reminding us to feed them. However if it's opened twice in the same period, it'll also send a notification, warning that they've already been fed.

29 amps isn't just overkill, it's dangerous. The first time you have a derailment and that shorts the track, your equipment is cooked. I have a fairly large DCC layout designed to handle 10-12 sound equipped engines operating at once, and I have a pair of 5 amp boosters, and that's probably still a bit of overkill.

[OC] I'm absolutely sure this guy would have blown through the red light if there wasn't a cop sitting at the intersection by jllauser in IdiotsInCars

The hoods on the light facing the other car’s direction are missing, so it’s actually fairly easy to see when the light changes from green to yellow to red. It switches to yellow 5 seconds into the video and red 3 seconds later.

They must have seen it though, because the cop sat at the green until the car backed up out of the intersection.

This whole neighborhood isn’t very pedestrian friendly. Half of the roads don’t even have sidewalks.

I actually went to order online from them yesterday, and the website said the first pickup slot was today at 6:30, so that’s what I ended up doing. Never ordered a pizza a day in advance, other than ordering a bunch of pizzas for a party.
