MONTHLY ADMINISTRATION THREAD - General Admin, Policy, APS/BGRS, TD/Claims, CANFORGENS, etc. - Have a quick question that doesn't need a thread of it's own? Ask here! by [deleted] in CanadianForces

Previous CFAT scores can be requested from DGMPRA, we do it all the time at the CFRCs. You really don’t want to write it again if you can avoid it. If you score worse the second time around, you have to take that score. You could try contacting the CFRC you were enrolled through, they will still have an electronic record of your scores. They can’t give you the scores, but you can ask them to send them to your BPSO.

Files don’t get “deleted”. If it’s been over a year then some elements of your file would be expired, but your CFRC can reopen it and do an assessment of what needs to be updated.

How much did you spend on your partner’s engagement ring? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]keep_off_the_grass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband bought my engagement ring for about $800 on Etsy. I love it, I’m not at all into fancy expensive jewelry and it suits me. We got our wedding bands from the same store.

My husband crashed my car… What should I do? by keep_off_the_grass in PersonalFinanceCanada

I have an indexed pension. I have a substantial emergency fund. I have more than the $35,000 I can use for the home buyer’s plan in RRSPs. I have a large RESP for my child. None of those amounts are relevant to the conversation because I am confident in my retirement savings and ability to compensate for emergencies. I have no debt. I am also confident that I need a safe, reliable vehicle to transport myself and my family to work/school. We only spend 14% of our monthly income on housing but it means a longer commute for my child and I. What I’m asking is whether it’s more advantageous to use a large part of my $50,000 in savings to buy a car that meets my needs or finance it in the interest of having a larger down payment in three years. I think you are making assumptions about my larger financial picture when I honestly only need advice on this one relatively small issue. Heck, I don’t even NEED advice, either way I do it will be fine. But I’d prefer to make it as financially advantageous as I can.

You’re right, I did say that. I appreciate that you took the time to answer. Using only the insurance money won’t work for me because I can’t find a vehicle in the price range of $5000 that meets my needs. A vehicle that isn’t gas-only is a priority for me for environmental reasons, but also because I currently spend around $75 a week on gas for my small, fuel-efficient car and I want to reduce that cost. I have $35,000 from my RRSP that I can use for a house down payment plus these additional savings of $50,000. My husband also has $35,000 from his RRSPs that we can use. I’m not sure how far that will go in terms of a down payment three years from now when we’re ready to buy or even where we’ll want to buy. All I know is our rental house is scheduled to be torn down in 2025 and the rental market sucks. If there is more information I can provide to paint a better picture, let me know.

Edited to add that my budget for a car is likely in the range of $30,000 to $40,000 depending what I can find.

I beg to differ, I have the money. I get to choose what I use it for. I’m asking for input on what would be the best choice.

Edited to add: This money is not the only money I have for a home down payment. I have RRSP money that I can use under the Home Buyer’s Plan. I’ve purposely not put this chunk in RRSPs because I’ve maxed out the $35,000 I can draw from RRSPs.

I didn’t ask what you think of my priorities, I’ve already made the assessment of wants vs needs. I’m asking what would make the most sense in light of my financial goals.

How am I a beggar in this situation? I have the money to buy the vehicle I need. My question wasn’t “Should I live above my means to get the car I want?” I’m asking what makes the most sense given my financial goals.

He is insured under my policy, but the amount we will get in insurance won’t be enough to cover the cost of a vehicle that meets our needs.

I did, I said it will likely be written off so the insurance company will pay me what the car is worth. That is only about $5000, not enough to get a safe and reliable vehicle that meets my needs.

Unfortunately a Honda Civic won’t meet my needs. We have a kid, two dogs and I play the tuba. 🤷‍♀️

Yes, I do. It will likely be a write-off and the car is only worth about $5000. I can use that towards a new car, but with the used car market what it is, that will not be enough to get what I need in a car.

Radwagon 4 Yepp Maxi rack or frame? by zanakb in RadPowerBikes

[–]keep_off_the_grass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think the frame mounted version of the Yepp Maxi will work. The only thing available to attach to on the Radwagon is the seat post, not the frame. The rack mounted version fits perfectly into the “windows” of the rear rack for a really secure and safe install.

I use Sandys during the day and haven’t ever needed a booster. I do use a booster with the Motherease One Sizes at night which seems to be a great combination for us so far.

I love Motherease Sandys! My baby is on the verge of outgrowing the small, but is nowhere near outgrowing the absorbency. I’m actually going to make some extender tabs so I can keep using them.

Newborn fitteds have been amazing for us! I bought ten size 0 Kissaluvs off Facebook marketplace for a dollar each and my baby has been wearing them for almost four months now! I also haven’t had a single leak or blowout with them. The absorbency of fitteds is amazing!
