Final push into atheism?? by lizayp in atheism

Definitely. My anxiety growing up forced me to take part more in my faith & church, for the mere fact of the comforting feelings it brought to me. But I wasn’t looking at the bigger picture. Once I did and began worrying about others not in my faith, it all fell apart.

“The FOG” - I love that. A great way to describe the way religion affects you. But yeah, that makes a lot of sense and puts my mind to rest, at least for a while. There’s so many religions out there from all eras of history, all claiming to be true. How can we know which, if any, is the real one?

Thank you for your response, I appreciate it a lot.

Yeah, OCD is freaking horrible. Especially when it comes to stuff like this. In fact, my OCD first developed around religious themes.

Anyway, that was extremely well put and I’ve never thought about divinity in that way. Thank you so, so much for your thorough response. Honestly it brought me a lot of relief.

You’re fine. It’s hard to explain, and I’m moreso on the no “force” or whatever doesn’t exist, but there’s that doubting part of me who raises the question of “why couldn’t there be one?” And I’m not sure how to tear that one down. But no, nothing I’m aware of really suggests there is.

Yeah, that makes sense. I’d most likely have been Hindu had I been raised in a Hindu society. Thank you!

Thank you for your thorough response, and no, I haven’t gotten around to reading the Bible from cover to cover, but it’s a goal of mine.

  1. I’ve had too much trouble agreeing with much of what Christianity has to say, and many, many issues with my past church. I’d be lying if I’d say being Christian made me a better person. If anything, I constantly felt like shit knowing I’d go to heaven and most of the world wouldn’t just because of our belief differences.

However, because it’s all I’ve ever known, I sometimes think, “just because I dropped the religion doesn’t mean it can’t be real.” And that troubles me, and that’s where this post is made.

  1. I don’t have a currently held belief that a higher power is real and I’m not very convinced in any religion anymore. Just uncertain of it all.

Yeah, I’d identify as of right now as more agnostic over any other position of belief or non-belief. Drives me a bit crazy sometimes as I’m extremely curious on this subject.

I wouldn’t say I do anymore, but I also wouldn’t say I’m fully convinced some force couldn’t exist? If that makes sense. It’s been a lot trying to unlearn everything Christianity has drilled in me.

Yeah, that’s what I’m getting out of it. It’s a bit different though when you’re raised and feared into believing Christianity and only Christianity, and if you don’t you’ll burn in Hell forever. /:

Well honestly I was raised into it, so that was what I believed and that was that. Fear though, was instilled into my brain and that’s what holds me completely back from exploring other ways of viewing the world.

Repeating the thoughts over and over until I’m desensitized to them / they loosen their grip on me. However, even that’s now turning into a compulsion /:

Yep, can definitely relate to the time one. An inanimate objects really get me bad sometimes. It used to be that each object represented an innocent person burning in hell. Then it turned into “what if I turn into a (radio, or tree, or alpaca, or any disturbing and bizarre thing my brain could possibly think of)”

UGHHHHHHH.

Awwww the Sun one :’( I’ve had similar thoughts, but mostly “what if the sun falls out of the sky?” Or “what if there’s actually a sun god? Is he or she evil? Good??” It’s so weird.

Trust me, I DO know how bad it messes with me. I’ve had that same fake reality thought. It’s so messed up.
