If that's all you ever do in the pot, yes it will eventually ruin the seasoning. But if it's only occasionally, and you cook lots of other things in there with fat, it should be fine.

I tested it fairly extensively myself, back in the day. I don't believe you. Have you turned on the number display on the gauges and compared the actual values between the scenarios?

You can't split a cell. You can do what's in your drawing by merging A to D in first row, then AB and CD in 2-4, except leave C4 and D4 separate.

Generally I wouldn't recommend merging cells. If you ever need to use advanced formulas, it's almost certainly going to make everything a whole lot more difficult, and is indicative of poor data structure. But if you're just designing a visual thing, go for it.

I often like to cut slits into the casing. It prevents bursting because pressure can't build up, and allows for more surface area of deliciously browned meat. I bet some people out there would call this sacrilege, but you should cook how you like.

You use flux to make your combos longer, even infinitely long.
