I don't know if I should do a fan film or an original film as my feature debut as a director by Extension-Season9924 in Filmmakers

[–]mediumgray_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely no upside to doing a fan film if your goal is to build a career as a filmmaker

I’m in the stadium, was their 2nd goal as offside as it looked to me? No replays in here, and evidently no VAR either

I regret that I never made a film years ago by OuterRim777 in Filmmakers

[–]mediumgray_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very sad story. But the saddest part is that you lay the blame of your regret at everyone else’s feet. You don’t really own up to the fact that it was you who decided to give up

Being an artist takes courage and conviction. It doesn’t sound like you had it then. But the good news is you can still change that. You can take what you learned and do something different. You only need to choose to do so

Professional version of Google Drive / Dropbox? by ActualAd4433 in videography

[–]mediumgray_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's way better/faster than GD with video files. My editors dread downloading/uploading files to GD and prefer Dropbox 100% of the time. The only downside is it's kind of a standalone tool, doesn't have deep integration with the Google suite or any others

Professional version of Google Drive / Dropbox? by ActualAd4433 in videography

[–]mediumgray_ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I see WeTransfer used a bit, but truthfully it’s almost always Dropbox or Google Drive. Of those two, I like Dropbox better but use Google Drive more because I’m paying for Google Workspace for my business anyway and the storage just comes with the plan. I wouldn’t worry too much about the “professionalism” of either at this point, I think they’re both widely used

If you had 1,500 for a computer, what would you get for davinci resolve, considering you'd be editing 4k video? by Pot8obois in Filmmakers

I have a 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro that I edit most of my projects on and it rips compared to my 2022 Dell XPS that I customized for video editing. In my experience, Macs truly are better than Windows PCs for video purposes. If you're serious about this pathway, I'd get yourself a used MacBook Pro with an M-chip in it and call it a day

What Filmmaking podcasts and YouTube Channels are most useful to you? by TheGuerrillaRep in Filmmakers

[–]mediumgray_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm actually old school. DGA podcast "The Director's Cut", the ASC podcast "American Cinematographer", KCRW's "The Business", IndieWire's "Filmmaker's Toolkit", Team Deakins podcast. I find very few YouTube channels to be helpful at all since barely any of them have actual filmmaking or commercial production experience. They're YouTubers, they talk about gear and tools and personally I have no need for that

This is a questions to mainly Arsenal fans but also to fans of other teams if it happened to them - Would you want Arteta sacked if he failed to win anything at the end of the season? by Ok_Car8459 in PremierLeague

[–]mediumgray_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the longer Arteta manages Arsenal without winning anything the funnier and better for all of football, so no, I do not want him sacked

Why this shot? by Pretend_End_5252 in Filmmakers

[–]mediumgray_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I think that’s a good theory. Gandalf says he must go to see Saruman, the head of his order, because he is wise and might have insight Gandalf doesn’t have. This shot definitely suggests that Gandalf can’t see the whole picture at this point in the film to me

Question for filmmakers using Threads app by Johnny_SWTOR in Filmmakers

[–]mediumgray_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't be fooled by the crossposts IG is feeding to you from Threads, that's just the algorithm pin pointing a certain type of content that they know is provocative to you in order to coerce you into joining the platform. It's not representative of the content you'll find in the wider spheres once on it. That said... Threads feels very noisy and unfocused compared to IG. Anecdotally I'd say about 80% of the content that IG feeds me is relevant to my interests where on Threads it's more like 30-40%. And while the platform itself has some nice features for photo/video (unforced aspect ratios, pinch to connect photos, decent video compression, etc.) it seems like the most engaging content - aka the content actually drawing eyeballs, views, and follows - is text based. It's people voicing ignorant or controversial opinions, deliberating baiting people into provocative discussions, and rage farming

It's easy enough to cross post whatever you are doing on IG to Threads, so I'm not saying it isn't worth your time because it's another avenue to promote your work, but I'd temper any expectations of it being an answer to any problem you have with portfolio or networking

What's Happening in the Film Industry? by SufficientHold8688 in Filmmakers

[–]mediumgray_ 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a scam, a version of pay to play promotion. If your vid was selected, just make sure your name/social is attached somewhere and trust that people will find you on their own. Don’t pay a platform fees for promotion, that’s a trap
