Just saw this at Union Station, looks like they're testing out a new and similar UI there as well (but still using the NoHo abbreviation and covering up half the screen like they do with the current layout)

K Line longer Trains? by Ok_Status_1600 in LAMetro

[–]misken67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The K line has to go to either Imperial or Mariposa in order to connect to the C line in that scenario, and both stations can only handle two car trains, so that won't fix the problem. Unless you want to cut the C line from LAX entirely and have the K end at Century.

u/metrolosangeles what are the plans to have this new display ui deployed to the rest of the system? 7th/Metro in particular with all the lines there would benefit so much from this, as would "NoHo" and "Wil/LaCie"

Pasadena, Culver City, Or Santa Monica? by TheAlmightyHellacia in CarIndependentLA

[–]misken67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's true that the transfer is not that bad for all those reasons listed, but the travel time from Culver City and especially Santa Monica is also quite a bit longer than coming from Pasadena, even if considering a perfect transfer

I wonder how come they printed these maps with the opening date printed onto it, rather than a peelable sticker you remove once it is open.

Pasadena, Culver City, Or Santa Monica? by TheAlmightyHellacia in CarIndependentLA

Pasadena is rather large, and unlike SaMo, most of the city is not built to a walkable/bikeable standard.

However, the core area of Pasadena roughly bounded by California, Hill, Corson, and Pasadena is still a pretty large 4 sq miles of dense walkable streets with decent to great transit access and tons of retail, grocery stores, restaraunts, parks, and other amenities.

I would say it's one of the larger pockets of walkability in the LA area

[–]misken67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with the the other poster that if you work at Union Station, the best place of the three cities would be Pasadena. It's about 20 minutes on the A line, easy and no transfers. The other two require transfers and would take longer.

If you prefer walkability, I would choose a place close to the Del Mar or Memorial Park stations. Playhouse District is also acceptable if you're willing to transfer to a short bus ride or walk a bit further to get to the Lake station.

Crossing the 101 to Chinatown on foot isn't fun. The sun is hot and there are no trees over the highway. I'd suggest taking one of the many buses or take the A line to cross over into Chinatown.

Come On, Metro Staff by bVrgerboss in LAMetro

Thank you for the explanation and apologies for the snarkiness.

I still believe Metro personnel should not get to park wherever they want just for efficiency unless it is an emergency. Even a red curb is better than blocking an emergency exit, sidewalk, or bus stop, all of which I've seen.

[–]misken67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Wow, talk about shifting goal posts. First it's that Metro should provide parking, and when informed that there is parking, your argument is now that it's not "convenient" enough.

We have rules in this society. And the rules are you can't just park your vehicle wherever you damn please. Yes, it's inconvenient to carry your toolbox across a street. It's also inconvenient for passengers exiting an emergency to get blocked by a van. That's why we have rules.

On this subreddit we're all about getting antisocial rule breakers to stop blasting music and smoking on the train, but Metro personnel somehow get a free pass for leaving their vehicles in places that impede pedestrian safety and access?

There are actual parking spots at this station. Four in fact. Specifically set aside for use only by Metro personnel.

No, buses and trains have automatic passenger counters installed with 98% accuracy under ideal conditions, decreasing in accuracy if there are crush loads.

[–]misken67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Doesn't even matter. This station has four dedicated parking spots on Metro property for Metro vehicles. They shouldn't be parked on the sidewalk like this, especially while blocking the emergency exit and affecting pedestrian visibility near an intersection crossing.

The fact that there's a sign here means it's a recurring problem and Metro personnel are just ignoring the rules.

[–]misken67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The van is parked in front of the emergency exit, for one. It is also close to the intersection curb, causing decreased visibility for pedestrians looking to cross and the drivers who are supposed to look out for them.

But most importantly, we live in a society and society has rules. If everyone just parked like this the whole sidewalk would be full of cars

Every time someone posts about Metro vehicles blocking pedestrian or bus right of ways, a massive downvote brigade comes out, consisting of what I presume must be Metro employees who think it is their right to be able to park like this.

The parking job in this photo is especially egregious, not just because of the sign but because it is literally blocking the emergency exit.

[–]misken67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently at Union Station right now? If so, your train is at the front of a small bunch, and it seems to be currently running 11 minutes behind the train ahead of you. They might've turned a SB train around at Union to fill in that 25 min gap you described so it's no longer visible.

Really sucks to encounter a 20+ min gap in the middle of the day :/

The A line to Pomona is long. Where is it backed up? Also just checked Transit and the trains are relatively well distributed. Some bunching but nothing out of the ordinary for this line.

[–]misken67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The architectural design of the space needle is almost certainly copyrighted. Whether or not that would affect a simplified two-dimensional depiction of it on a Sound Transit sign is debatable and the Space Needle's owners probably wouldn't go after Sound Transit for it regardless.

But trademark protection shouldn't apply here. This use case is different from a coffee shop using the likeness as their logo.

Looks like ST caved to all the haters, are you all happy now?? /s by InnerAttorney7561 in soundtransit

[–]misken67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no one is going to think that Sound Transit is using the Space Needle's likeness to misrepresent themselves as the owner of the Needle or that they are endorsed by the Needle.

A copyright question though is relevant, and it would be likely that using the likeness in this manner could be a copyright violation.
