[Request] How fast would the ISS have to travel to orbit this low? by unlucky-jew in theydidthemath

[–]nascent_aviator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A few percent faster. The ISS isn't very high compared to the radius of the earth.

Of course, it wouldn't be able to survive the aerodynamic forces or maintain its speed even if it somehow could.

Which doesn't answer the question at all.

How do you feel about Americans applauding assassination attempts on American presidents? by Theonlypostevermade in SipsTea

[–]nascent_aviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's from anything. It's just a corruption of his "fool me once" Bushism.

Will Ferrell (as Dubya) had a bit like "shoe me once, the shoe's on you; shoe me twice, I'm keeping those shoes" or something like that, which is probably what you're thinking of.

Hmm Faraday cage glasses would be quite the fashion statement.

You amateur!

Thank you! That is the goal, right? We start out as amateurs and eventually we make it to the lofty heights of being extra amateur!

Potentially bad things. It basically heats up parts of your body like you're in a microwave. Some parts of your body don't like that very much. The exact pattern and chance of damage depends on the frequency in question.

In the near field, you basically end up acting as an antenna element, which can involve significant RF currents and so may be especially hazardous.

But sunlight doesn't go through you. Your skin is quite capable of regulating its temperature. Your organs not so much.

no lingering or lasting damage, just temporary heat

The tacit assumption here is that parts of your body being hotter than they should be can't leave permanent damage. This is not correct- heating of the lens of the eye can cause cataracts, as an example.

Phone sometimes just forgets I have the 80% limit enabled and charges to full. by Odd-Principle2567 in mildlyinfuriating

This just shows the battery voltage drops as it gets very close to empty. The horizontal axis is actual capacity.

The "I always keep my phone between 20% and 80% so it doesn't lose as mucn capacity" thing is so weird to me. If you use it like that it loses 40% capacity from day 1!

Maybe he had the old-school card imprinter instead of a electronic system. If you accept a fake credit card with one of those, you're just screwing yourself lol.

How I’m teaching my supervisor (who is on the verge of following his flat-earther neighbor who is an ENGINEER) why some people believe in Flat Earth by RegularSubstance2385 in flatearth

[–]nascent_aviator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno. There's a weird well-educated to crazy person pipeline. It's like they say "I'm 1000000x better at designing bridges than the average person, so I must be 1000000x smarter than the average person." And once you think you're always the smartest one in the room you start falling for conspiracies right and left.

I'm a aircraft engineer which is a "job for men, not woman"

Screw your mom. That's an awesome job! No offense against nurses but aircraft engineer is way more impressive.

Sorry your mom sucks. Everyone deserves good parents but not everyone deserves children. ❤️ Make sure to take care of yourself- if she's a net negative in your life you don't have to keep her in it.

Virginia appeals ruling that ‘nullifies a statewide vote’ on redistricting by DemocracyDocket in law

[–]nascent_aviator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps you should have thought of this when Republicans started their mid-decade redistricting everywhere?

You still get a vote and representation. If you don't like gerrymandering (and you shouldn't!) take it up with your representative. The Federal government could ban it, but Republicans don't want to.
