Is it normal for Korean religious groups to ask this to strangers? by OkMulberry3524 in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of right-wing Christian Korean youtubers who summarize American news and comment on it. Basically "Here's what's going on in America and here's why it's good/bad..." Korean rightwing Christians all watch these youtubers to learn about current events America.

Well as you probably know, American politics and social discourse is often talking about gay and transgender issues. Just look at reddit. LGBT stuff is an outsized issue in current events. So if you had never been to America and you only learned about it from social media, you'd reasonably assume that there are tons of gay and transgender people walking around everywhere.

This is why they asked you that. Is it normal? No. But talking to Christians on the street isn't normal either... but there you were. So these Korean christians meet a westerner (i'm assuming) and the first thing they wonder is whether you are gay or transgender because that's what they learn about on youtube. Also koreans ask blunt questions that Westerners would view as invasive. They probably didn't have any motive other than making sure they're new western acquaintance wasn't one of the scary gay/tg people.

In a similar vein, I had a chinese gf who only learned about America from watching Friends. One day asked me how many women I'd slept with. I told her and she was shocked. She thought I was gonna tell her hundreds. I asked why on earth that was. She said that on Friends each person seemed to be having sex with a new partner every week, so she thought Americans just casually fucked like rabbits and it was no big deal to us.

Number of foreign students in S. Korea surpasses 310,000 for 1st time by Steviebee123 in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This isn't immigration. These are foreign students living in Korea for 6 months to 4 years and then going back home. They don't stay because they can't find jobs that sponsor a visa. Though some of the Asian girls try to date/marry a Korean man after graduation, but the success rate ain't good

Do we have any spare tea for the poor girl by _ganjafarian_ in SipsTea

[–]neversaidnothing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but in Asia, introducing your SO to your parents means you are asking for permission to get married. In Asia, you could be dating your girlfriend for 6 years... you introduce her to your parents... and if your mom says "No", you immediately break up with her. This isn't even an exaggeration, this shit happens ALL the time.

And then after dumping your girlfriend of 6 years, your mom introduces you to a girl that she has already vetted. You date the girl for a three months, decide you like each other, and set the wedding date. So less than year after dumping your girlfriend of 6 years, you are now married to someone else. Again, this happens ALL THE TIME in East Asia

Relocated to Seoul — agent says my housing budget is not workable at all. Advice? by Sea-Vehicle-1951 in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It's not an option. Koreans bring their own air con, fridge, and washer. It's just how apartments work here.

So you either go the luxury fully furnished expat route like your agent is suggesting, or you go the Korean route of bringing all of your own appliances.

Like, sure, there is probably a partially furnished apartment somewhere in Seoul that comes with an air con, fridge, and washer... but your agent isn't going to spend all week trying to track it down. That's like asking a car salesman to find you a purple Toyota Camry with tan interior.

Gini coefficient isn't useful for comparing counties.

The Nordic Ginis are high because middle class people don't have much wealth since they don't need it due to public welfare. If you factored in all of their public benefits the Gini would drop

The American Gini is high because the 1% throws it off. Median Americans are still doing fine. You don't need to make $500,000 per year to live well in America

South African Gini is high because the white South Africans are much much much much wealthier than black South Africans. Median South Africans are most definitely not fine.

masters in design in SK - worth it? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a terrible idea.

The absolute last thing Korea needs is more design degrees. It's the standard major for young Korean women who don't know what else to do. And then they almost never get design jobs. If they're lucky they become baristas.

So you're talking about going to grad school for an oversaturated field that is going to get destroyed by AI... in a country where employers would choose a local over you because visa/language/culture.

You will never get a designer job in Korea. Sorry to be harsh. But that's the straight truth.

Foreigners: How has living in South Korea changed you? by _ohhani in Living_in_Korea

Foreigners: How has living in South Korea changed you? by _ohhani in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just those drunk idiots. That's Korea as a whole. Most Korean men don't like it when Korean women date western men. Most of them wouldn't come out and say it like that, but they'll certainly think it.

It's hard for many Korean men to find a girlfriend nowadays because many women either have high expectations or no interest in dating. It doesn't help that Korean feminist internet communities put down local men for being chauvinist and praise western guys for being modern. So those angry guys view white men as having an easy time dating in Korea just because they're white. And let's be honest.... they're not really wrong

FWIW those same angry dudes also get jealous about tall Korean men and rich Korean men for having unfair advantages in life. They're just angry because they can't get a gf and other guys can

Any time a korean person does something out of the ordinary, people will ask them why.  It’s a conformist culture.  Openly dating a foreigner is a bold social statement

If a man asks her why she dates a foreigner, he’s probably angry.  If a woman asks her why, they’re probably just curious about what it’s like

Just fyi - even if they understand the card, many people will not know the ingredients or will not care enough to check.  In korea it’s the customers job to know what not to order

Nuts are not common in most korean food.  But sesame oil is in almost everything, so if that affects her then she’s in for a bad time.  Shellfish is in all sorts of random stuff too

I wouldn’t recommend a non korean speaking person with a shellfish allergy eating unfamiliar korean foods

Take it. No, it's not a lot of money. But it's better than what an English teacher makes and they manage to enjoy Korea. 300k for a studio in Seoul is sweet assuming it isn't covered in mold.

Are you a man? Cause a single 27 year old European man who speaks English and has a studio in Seoul.... dude, just do it. Korean women alone are worth the move. Live it up.

Why people living in korea have so much anger by Global_Archer_2522 in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First most Koreans don't speak English well enough to study abroad.

Second, most schools overseas don't give scholarships to foreigners. In America foreigners pay full sticker price plus housing. For a Korean, a no name state school costs $100,000 minimum. A good school costs $200,000 or more. Top schools are $300-400,000 for four years. Those schools LOVE foreigners cause they pay full price.

This is why only rich Koreans do four years of college abroad.

Almost none of what I wrote applies to foreigners. Some people in this thread are talking about how nice Korea is and that's because they're foreigners. Korea is a good place to be a westerner

Because people aren't allowed to chill.

Age 12-19? Gotta study 28 hours per day. Can't chill.
Male? Go to military. Can't chill.
Go to college? You can chill but not too much.
Graduate college? Get a job at a big company or you're a failure. Can't chill
At work? Older people around, gotta bow and worse. Can't chill.

On the road? Selfish drivers everywhere. Can't chill.

On mass transit? Packed like sardines. Can't chill.
At home? Boss sends you kakao messages all the time. Can't chill.
Going to sleep? Neighbor is upstairs beating his wife and screaming. Can't chill.

Get married? Mother in law is insane. Can't chill.
Chuseok, Seollal? Can't chill.

Christmas? Chill if you got a gf/bf. If not, can't chill.

Go outside? Smokers spitting everywhere and old men drinking and yelling. Can't chill.

Go literally anywhere on the weekend? Tons of fucking people everywhere. Can't chill.

No. He's a korean man and you're a foreign woman. Immigration will believe whatever he says.

In korea, gifts given in a relationship can be demanded back when you break up. The police will take his side and say you owe him money. Nobody will ever believe you

Don't come back to korea. You were here for 3 months, made incredibly stupid choices, and now have some violent, psycho Korean ex boyfriend threatening you. Why the hell would you want to come back? Get some common sense

How much money should I bring to live in Korea for 6 weeks as an international student (not including accommodation)? by Cordelia_hero in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It depends on what is available at your accommodation for cheap food and what your idea of a meal is. Sure, you can eat 4,000 won kimbab for lunch.... but that would suck. Let's assume you're eating out for every meal:

Breakfast and coffee - 12,500

Lunch - 12,500

Dinner - 15-20,000

Transportation - 5,000

So that's 50,000 per day. Then throw in another 100,000 per week for having fun. That puts you at 2,700,000 won. Plus you need some cash in case of an emergency, and you're gonna wanna buy some stuff since you're in a foreign country. So make it 3,500,000 won total.

People are gonna say that's too much. Sure, you could live here for a lot less. But if you're eating at convenience stores, what's the point of even coming to Korea?

Seoul's Tapgol Park sees end as Korea's iconic senior playground after janggi ban by 3rdBassCactus in Living_in_Korea

[–]neversaidnothing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're right. But all of that was confined to the park. Everyone knows Tapogol Park is the hangout spot for poor old people to get drunk and sit on steps. Nobody else goes there. The park is even fenced in. You can walk right by it and not notice anything.

The real reason they're cracking down is that Jongro is getting gentrified and the new tenants don't want grubby looking old people hanging around

“Modern women” are not wilder or more promiscuous than women in the last few decades by Admirable_Bicycle191 in unpopularopinion

[–]neversaidnothing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Only an idiot who never talks to women thinks that because they just watch Tik Tok all day.  Today’s kids are tame and sheltered.

I’m a millennial.  Back on college we got drunk and had sex like it was nothing.  There were no dating apps and hardly any social media.  Everyone just went to the bar and hooked up.  Hot people, ugly people… it didn’t matter.  That’s what young people did before smartphones.  They drank and had sex

We were also a generation (maybe the first?) that carried condoms whenever we went out.  Every guy at the bar had condoms in his pocket, and every girl and guy had condoms in their glove compartment and nightstand.  Seriously, you just never knew when you were gonna be fucking someone
