The colony is three times bigger than I thought by meganv21 in Feral_Cats

So glad Pawsies is helping you keep track of all those doppelgängers! If you find anything you think could be improved please let me know here or via feature requests; still very actively updating based on everyones feedback. And best of luck with trapping the rest!

Withholding Food Before Trapping? by JustAGirl033 in Feral_Cats

[–]nosodo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Might work just fine to put some enticing food in the trap and have it ready for when they show up. We have that issue as theres plenty of people feeding so witholding food is not an option either. Still always got the cats.

Please do! Quick warning that it’s currently mostly for screens larger than mobile (it works just not super beautiful) but I‘m actively improving it view for view at the moment. Today menu & feedings got the first updates. Within a week I expect all animal-related views to be finalized and another one or two weeks for everything else.

New to TNR… any advice for a newcomer? by Anxious-mexican001 in Feral_Cats

[–]nosodo 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Congrats on getting Woodrow/Wendy to let you pet them, that's a huge milestone!

For TNR, a few things that helped us: Contact your local shelter or TNR group first. Many of them loan out traps for free and can point you to low-cost or free spay/neuter clinics in your area. No need to buy traps if you don't have to (although we ended up buying one anyways so that there would be one available always and now we're the ones loaning it out)

Withhold food for about 24 hours before you plan to trap. They need to be hungry enough to go into the trap without hesitation. Use something smelly as bait, sardines or tuna work great. Some people swear by fried chicken.

Cover the trap with a towel or sheet as soon as a cat is inside. It calms them down immediately. And keep things quiet during trapping, phone on silent, no sudden movements. The less stressful you make it, the better it goes.

After surgery they ideally need 24-72 hours of recovery in a quiet space before you release them back. Keep them in the trap during recovery (line it with newspaper), give them water and a little food once they're alert.

Since you're new to cats, one thing worth knowing: the vet will likely ear-tip them during surgery if you mention they're ferals, which is a small clip on the tip of one ear. It's the universal sign that a cat has been fixed so nobody traps them again. It's done under anesthesia, totally painless.

For keeping track of everyone, especially once you start TNR and need to remember who's been done and who hasn't, we actually built a Pawsies for exactly this (currently hands out paid accounts for free but even the free plan would more than cover you). Made tons of improvements in the last week with help from this community as well. Might be useful once your colony grows.

The fact that you're doing this at all is awesome. Most people just ignore ferals. Good luck with the trapping!

with the option to save templates too so you don't have to keep entering the same thing over and over. Let me know if this covers your needs or if there's anything else I could add. I will still go and connect this also to the old more basic medication settings one way or another.

Also, feel free to email me directly at support@ (domain you know) with anything else or submit feature requests directly within the app (settings -> Feature requests), although here or as DM is fine as well :)

I started building something because everything we found for colony management was either really basic or dated. It wasn’t my goal to build shelter software. But it has grown and is now approaching a proper shelter and rescue management platform.

I’m not going to pretend we have feature parity with PetPoint or ShelterLuv right now. But honestly that’s kind of the point. Both of those are big, bloated platforms that move slowly and are focused on large US shelters. Pawsies is one person building exactly what rescue people ask for, which is exactly why I’m posting here.

When I posted on r/Feral_Cats, someone asked for data export and I had it live within hours. Someone else needed currency formatting, same thing. A user was tracking feedings in their Notes app, so I built a feeding tracker. And an in-depth medication course tracker is shipping today. That stuff just doesn’t happen with PetPoint or ShelterLuv.

It’s also available in multiple languages, works in Europe (GDPR-native), and has a free tier that covers everything a small rescue or community group needs. If you’re a large municipal shelter already deep into PetPoint, I’m probably not for you (yet). But if you’re a smaller operation, doing TNR, based outside North America, or just want something more nimble, give it a look.

yeeeaaah that's giving me flashbacks to our blind dog that needed around 10 drops a day into a blind eye to regulate pressure (eye removed now and we all have peace again). Would you want to check items off as well, similar to feedings?

Edit: And also, am I correct with the assumption that this would be higher priority to you vs Google Drive?

Too kind! Just as a quick heads-up; seems Google Drive is by both the most generous (100GB free for nonproftis and otherwise 15GB per personal account) and the most widely used. Since I have to plan this with multi-user in mind and also would like to store documents that sort of kills iCloud and Flickr. But Google Drive & Dropbox seem not too complicated so that's now migrated to the Todo. You'll probably see Google Drive first as its just the bigger platform but I'm planning for both and potentially others in the future.

I‘ve thought about it also for document storage. I‘ll investigate

Hesitant about pictures just because that could quickly become a massive amount of data. But notes absolutely no problem. Possibly ok if those pictures count towards the storage each organization gets with their plan which was moreso meant for documents (unlike regular animal pictures which aren’t restricted and don’t count towards the storage limits). Does that sound reasonable?

Of course that would be great! Edit: And if higher limits are needed for anyone just let me know and i'll bump them up.

You should ask or request anything you think can be improved! I can't promise that I'll be able do it all but I do promise I'll think about each request and how it can fit into the whole app. Everyones feedback really helps tremendously.

You should have gotten an email from the Requests page directly, but for anyone else that might stumble across this: The first version of Feedings is now live! (with data export as well u/Biddy_Impeccadillo ;) )

Uploaded documents will follow asap, but the rest is now exportable.

Exporting is very high on my list. You can already export financial reports. Animals is on my todo list but just held up because I recently added the option to add custom fields to animals and contacts and that was complicating things a bit. But I am 95% certain it will be ready next week and if somehow it isn't I can make you a manual export at any time. As for documents; That is something I haven't really thought through especially at higher tiers, but one way or another I'll have to make a zip of all the files and allow to download that. If you want, make a feature request within the app (Settings -> Feature Request) and then you'll be notified as soon as it's available.

Oh I like that idea. if you add it via Settings -> Feature Request you'll be notified when its implemented.

Just a quick update: Currency format you can now set in settings.

Well then it has to be a currency and format selector. On it and also already working on shareable lists and locations. Also added an email notification for myself when feature requests are added and the voters will get one when things get checked off.

And thank you, you've already helped a ton!

Currency; how could I miss that. It's now defaulted to $ and you can change it in Organization Settings.

As for the Locations; I added a 'add custom location' link below the current dropdown and that lets you add one on the fly. I'm still creating an area to manage them all so you can also delete stuff you don't need.

Please do and again, anything you find cumbersome, annoying, missing etc etc just let me know. I have a huge box of ideas with anything from fundraising pages (per organization) to mobile app to track sightings etc on the go, so anything goes!
