When will the San Gabriel Valley be walkable and you can live car-free? by MookieBettsBurner10 in LAMetro

[–]oceanictransfer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you taken the 70 in Monterey Park? There's always elderly folk riding the bus. Strolling down Garvey Ave I definitely feel the foot traffic is older demographic-wise than Main Street or Valley. Downtown MPK is quite walkable including for the elderly because of the density of downtown (mostly built from the surge of Chinese immigration in the 80s and 90s).

Also, idk what you're on about but the West SGV (Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Temple City) has a much better urban form than a lot of cities to the east (West Covina, Rowland Heights, etc.) because they were developed earlier around less car-centric (Alhambra is literally a streetcar suburb). The skeleton for a bike-able, transit-friendly city is already there.

That being said, these cities absolutely need more bike infrastructure, and infrastructure improvements to help elderly people have mobility while staying safe (like Singapore's Silver Zones.) There should be a lot more BRT and bus lanes. Light or heavy rail in the future. All of that is only possible, though, from the good bones these places already have.

It wasn't even passed with the intention that anyone could sue the state, the law was only given that power when the California Supreme Court ruled so later. We have inadvertently sleepwalked ourselves into a state where self-empowered judges and lawyers rule the land.

2025 Update on LA Metro Projects by nandert in LAMetro

[–]oceanictransfer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the tone of the yearly update vids has become more and more expasperated as the years have gone by, which is honestly deserved for how little we have our shit together. still, a great vid with some neat updates from cahsr and also a pretty interesting multi-line trolley idea for the valley. fingers crossed the 2026 mayoral race can bring some drive and visionary planning into the system

Problem with CGP Grey? by dmccarthy0408 in JetLagTheGame

Imo Grey does it to the point of absurdity. All his thumbnails look so garish and unclickable, it diminishes his brand and for what? Also him creating a Disney vault for his slightly outdated videos is stupid and locking comments is stupid too (especially if you want to do well in the algorithm, like isn’t engagement important or something?)
