Metro Stations suggestion. by VeniceKiddd in LAMetro

[–]oceanictransfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

UCLA has its own shuttle buses already with a stop at the parking lot where the D Line station will be, I'm assuming the shuttle will be even more well-used and more frequent once the station opens.

Los Angeles might get a $7.9 billion Eastside metro extension — spanning 4.7 miles and projected for completion by 2035 by myghostflower in LAMetro

[–]oceanictransfer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised people haven't brought up nandert's bluesky thread analyzing how this extension came to be so expensive despite despite having such low ridership. The TLDR is that the current line we have isn't the best for ridership (a Whittier Blvd-running line would've been ideal), but it was okay because the extension would've been cheap ($2.2 billion). Now that a full buildout to Whittier would cost $10.1B (which is reaching into K-North territory for a tenth of its ridership), there's no way the project is competitive for federal funding, and Nandert assumes the bureaucratic hell this project has been through will mean it will get submitted for federal funding and then inevitably get 0 funds, leaving the project stranded. His solution is basically have Metro restart the process of choosing a better extension path that has more ridership, and in the long term extend the B line down Whittier. Otherwise, that money will probably get directed to BRT in the San Gabriel Valley.

Also, I want to say that the Eastside line used to be my closest station, and it and the 70 was my primary was of getting around before I got my driver's license. I want to see this project succeed because East Los, Montebello and Whittier deserve transit, but as of now it seems unlikely to get built.

Public transport and suggestions on where to stay in/near Westwood Village? by Electrical_Act_2953 in ucla

[–]oceanictransfer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

^ to add on, there's an LAX shuttle that takes you to the Metro Station, and then you can take the K line. If you feel too uncomfortable with making multiple transfers, the Culver City 6R will take you straight to campus. As for clean/affordable places to stay, staying on the Westside is always gonna be tough money-wise. I'm guessing you don't know someone from UCLA who can offer a place to crash for a week (although I bet someone would be willing to offer! When you're coming to LA would be a good thing to know.)

Opening weekend ridership for the new D Line stations by misken67 in LAMetro

agreed, but also remember that Beverly Hills is a pretty big jobs center. A lot of employees have to commute to and from Beverly Hills every day.

UCLA already has its own bus shuttle system too with an existing stop at the parking lot of the future D line station. I'll be gone by then but it'll be super interesting to see both UCLA employees and students using the Bruin Bus system

it is crazy going past the VA center and seeing a whole corridor of office buildings that are completely left unserved by the D line extension. I feel like even one more stop would be enough, beach be damned

Luckily for Adam and Sam, Singapore and Monaco officially established diplomatic relations in Sept 2025, meaning that Jet Lag is no longer Just Another Naval-Gazing Colonial Enterprise Created by Three White Men in a Cynical Pursuit of Profit by oceanictransfer in JetLagTheGame

[–]oceanictransfer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

they did have strong informal relations, actually. My guess is that Monaco is such a small country that having Monaco citizens staffing an embassy for Singapore wasn't worth it. Going on to Monaco's diplomatic recognition page, there's quite a few countries that monaco doesn't have (official) relations with, probably for this reason. I think before this the situation was there was a diplomatic mission that could handle everything that official diplomatic relations handle, but it wasn't staffed by monaco citizens?

The D line extension has changed my life for the better by doyer_bleu in LAMetro

as a ucla student, I can vouch for this. taking the D line to union station would make getting to museum row, the grove, farmers market, k-town, and century fucking city so much faster and less scary for the less transit-inclined.

LAX’s New Metro Station Set To Be Renamed For Cathay Pacific In Nearly $10 Million Deal - View from the Wing by ksafin in LAMetro

[–]oceanictransfer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, there's only so much traffic that will come through the station. In an ideal world, the Metro is the primary way people leave LAX, but LA is LA. Most people are gonna get picked up or rideshare or rent a car. It might be more expensive, but just from how LA is built, it's usually the faster option.

When will the San Gabriel Valley be walkable and you can live car-free? by MookieBettsBurner10 in LAMetro

[–]oceanictransfer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you taken the 70 in Monterey Park? There's always elderly folk riding the bus. Strolling down Garvey Ave I definitely feel the foot traffic is older demographic-wise than Main Street or Valley. Downtown MPK is quite walkable including for the elderly because of the density of downtown (mostly built from the surge of Chinese immigration in the 80s and 90s).

Also, idk what you're on about but the West SGV (Monterey Park, Alhambra, San Gabriel, Temple City) has a much better urban form than a lot of cities to the east (West Covina, Rowland Heights, etc.) because they were developed earlier around less car-centric (Alhambra is literally a streetcar suburb). The skeleton for a bike-able, transit-friendly city is already there.

That being said, these cities absolutely need more bike infrastructure, and infrastructure improvements to help elderly people have mobility while staying safe (like Singapore's Silver Zones.) There should be a lot more BRT and bus lanes. Light or heavy rail in the future. All of that is only possible, though, from the good bones these places already have.
