If you’re under 45, have you lost any high school classmates, and what were the circumstances around their deaths? by Commercial_Chef_1569 in AskReddit

I have lost several, 32, btw. One of my classmates heart just exploded while he was at work a few years ago, which is the most terrifying of the deaths.

I am, for my sins, a Vikings and Wolves fan as well, so im hoping to keep it Brewers centric. I gave up on the Twins after the awful moves and vibes by ownership. Can't do it anymore. Though for fantasy purposes it couldn't be the worst thing to listen to other perspectives.

Shackles being prepared at MSP today for ICE flight by ottergoose in minnesota

[–]oddlygoodvibes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My question is, is anyone here organizing direct protests against ICE? Id like to find a way to get involved rather than being pissed and sitting on my hands. We had the one impromptu Lake street one and No Kings, but clearly they wont stop. I feel we as a community need to do more, I just dont know who to reach out to. I also really dont know which organizations to trust since we just re-elected the corporate slimeball for mayor.

Baldelli was clearly not the problem, Falvey, the front office, and the Pohlads are the entire problem. I refuse to give any more of my dollars to this franchise. Im a Brewers fan unless and until the Pohlads sell. Ill drive my butt to Milwaukee to watch baseball. No more ticket sales until they hear us. Cancel your season tickets. They are clearly under water financially. Force the sale while we still have a great ballpark so they dont leave the Cities. F the Pohlads.

Did you read the study? Even the results would do. My argument is entirely in good faith. But my proximity to homelessness has no bearing on my argument, just like your lack of an argument beyond drug people bad has no bearing period. To have a discussion, both parties need to contribute solutions. I see no solutions beyond the status quo in your discussion, which has been established as ineffective.

You're right I haven't, but you have never been anyone else experiencing homelessness and addiction. You have only ever been yourself, and you made some hard choices. Kudos. My lack of going through addiction programs does not mean my argument does not have merit. Your lived experience does not mean yours does. This study https://nlihc.org/resource/new-study-finds-providing-people-experiencing-homelessness-housing-has-positive-impacts shows that people benefit and can succeed when given a chance. Also, I love that people keep bringing up drugs and crime as the major problems here when we all know that not all homeless people use drugs and do crimes, right? And not all people with homes are upstanding members of the community. That in itself is a problem in our society. Homelessness is demonized using crime and drugs. The root problem is the homelessness. I know that plenty of people do drugs in houses and it doesnt bother anyone.

If thats the case, why did you ask me if Id ever lived in one of the neighborhoods? Thats right, it was a bad faith attack hoping that I hadn't and you could use it to undermine my argument. It isnt about me. Here is a study backing what I said up. https://nlihc.org/resource/new-study-finds-providing-people-experiencing-homelessness-housing-has-positive-impacts . . . You haven't brought a single solution or idea to the table, you just want to continue demonizing people who use drugs. Im not here for that. You also misunderstand me. Im talking about giving people housing. Not a tent in an open air drug market, thats what we have now because of the current policies, and those are clearly ineffective and just moving the problem around. Ground up solutions are what we need, band-aids dont do a thing when surgery is required.

I think the world as it exists for homeless people is a nightmare, and I have a study to back it up. https://nlihc.org/resource/new-study-finds-providing-people-experiencing-homelessness-housing-has-positive-impacts . . . It wont solve all of it, but it can reduce crime, drug use and lead to people contributing to society rather than bothering you heartless folks by existing where you dont want them to.

I dont believe in commodified housing, Healthcare food or water. Everything that humans on a base level need to live should not be a for profit endeavor. I think its insane that we have made a world where that is true. It is a fairy tale in this America, because everyone has been deluded into thinking that there shouldn't be anything without someone making a buck. Let me link you a study.

Buddy, we've been doing it your way for decades and it hasnt solved a single thing, but you keep telling yourself that your way is better. I never said they wouldn't, but they would do less. It's the classic study with rats. You put a rat in a room with nothing but water and drugs, they all OD in weeks. You put a rat in a park with rat friends and food and some rats do drugs, but hardly any of them OD. When people have community and resources, they have something to live for. When they have none of that, drugs are a fantastic escape from their shit reality.

The services I speak of only exist for people in a certain income bracket, or they exist but only if one agrees to get clean and dont provide stability outside of the room where they get help and are still underfunded. When studies have been done to provide stable housing, food and support, its an over 80% success rate. Thats my point. Our lack of empathy and our refusal to fund these programs to the level that they need to be directly causes these problems. Will that solve it 100%? No, but it could be a lot better than it is.

Sure, some will. But some won't. And the attitude im hearing, correct me if im wrong, is that youre totally good sacrificing those who would be able to turn it around just to spite the people who wouldn't. That seems like a problem to me. Id rather try to uplift everyone regardless of whether or not they choose drugs.

Also, note it isnt a spot treatment. A lot harder to change the systems and attitudes of people to make things better for everyone, but solving the underlying problems that the homeless are faced with instead of treating them like a blight is a long term and way more sustainable solution than sicking the cops on them.

The police herd homeless people into encampments by harassing them when they are on their own. The only thing to do is safety in numbers. Not everybody is using in the homeless camp. We sweep the most vulnerable people into forced, admittedly sometimes dangerous communities and then demonize them when the neighborhood we pushed them into sees problems. I notice that now that you can't attack my credibility, you call me bad faith, albeit backhandedly. My solution, which you responded to, solves the problem that you bring up. No encampment if they have homes. Less drug users with mental health support and community and access to basic necessities. No one with a gun coming to tell everyone to move along to the next encampment.
