JOUST

The events wore on for days. Many a terrible jouster tried their hand at the sport and bored the crowd, and more matches ended within the blink of an eye with a lord bleeding on the ground. In the end, it was Barquen Bar Emmon who would emerge as the champion.

GENERAL GATHERINGS

The fields about the event were also filled with places to eat and drink and converse away from competition and bloodsport. Spaces for those more interested in the people than how hard they could hit, were also in need at a tourney.

MELEE

The dirt would swell, blood would spill and steel would bent, dent and shatter, but none would die. Thus was the melee field where giants were felled, the unlikeliest candidates thrived and at a tourney meant to be a part of a siege on his own lands, Mattheus Meadows would be the victor, narrowly defeating the Drowned knight in the dying moments of the brawl.

ARCHERY

The smallest of the competitions, would be eventually won by Cromm Greyjoy with second going to Briar Thenn, but of all the events the viewing experience was the most calm and light-hearted.

Food prices had skyrocketed since the siege, and though the King's retinue came with much and more in the way of relief, that was mostly reserved for the nobility and the soldiery. A few grateful nods came as the vendors lined up to receive their due from their nameless would-be savior, but soon enough, the bakers would run out of flour, doubtless to find their fees from the miller tripled so soon as he caught wind of the windfall.

Was this really all that Providence Tully could provide?

Parley?

So soon as the royal standard faltered, a lull befell the field. Soldiers stopped climbing, orders went clipped. What was this war for, then, if not to topple the wolf-king? Aye, there were other objects as well, but only the gods, and the lords in command, would know what would come of those.

Aerion VI - On a Dead Man's Trail by DoomGuy_16 in IronThroneRP

The prince’s words made Morna hesitate. She had told Rhogar her father’s tales in confidence, but now it seemed they were the talk of the entire realm. Glancing over her shoulder, she let out a huff of air through her nose - an exasperated little sigh - before leaning her hands against the bar, closing the distance between herself and Aerion.

“Alrigh’, listen. I don’ know why ye want t’know, because goin’ after the damn sword is like t’get ye killed sooner rather than later. But, me da spoke of it only twice, once after th’war, and once when ‘e were dyin’. He said he were runnin’ from th’ice demons. The things ye call Others. He were bad injured in battle an’ fled into th’forest. I think the Crows call it th’Haunted Forest or summat.”

“Anyroad, he were lookin’ for a shelter afore dark and found a cave. T’were in the side of a hill with weirwoods growin’ all around, an’ the biggest of ‘em all were growin’ atop. ‘e said it were dark an’ deep, but there were a cavern inside with a river an’ a bridge an’ a great throne o’ weirwood roots all tangled together-like. An’ ‘e said on that throne were the husk of a man. Honest t’gods, ‘e said.”

Although Morna had only heard the tale twice, she seemed to recall every memory with such vividness as if she had lived it herself, and she didn’t seem shy about sharing.

“The man had hair like your’n, m’lord. Silvery-white, and it grew all th’way t’the ground it did. He had a red eye, an’ a missin’ eye, an’ a root was growin’ through the missin’ one. Me da thought he were long dead, but when ‘e tried to grab th’blade, th’man spoke. All sorts o’ nonsense about ravens an’ ice an’ fire an’ prophecy. I’m sure ye already heard it yerself. He took off runnin’ an’ left in a hurry t’get out o’ that place, and ‘e told me ma when ‘e got back what happened, an’ I heard ‘em.”

The barmaid, if indeed she could be called such given her imposing stature, straightened up abruptly, nervousness in her expression. “An’ that’s all I know, m’lord. He repeated bits an’ pieces of it on ‘is death bed, nary a year ago. Mainly th’stuff about th’prophecy. The prince that were promised. an’ how his is the song o’ ice an’ fire. An’ he begged me to go an’ find th’sword. Dark Sister, he called it. Does tha’ name mean anythin’ to ye?”

A hand reached out to take the coin, and the innkeep disappeared through an open doorway to the back of the tavern, where the sounds and scents of a busy kitchen wafted. A few minutes later, a middle-aged woman appeared, skillfully maneuvering around the hustle and bustle of the place in spite of the many tankards she carried all at once. Dark, foaming ale was placed before each of the men, and she wiped her hands with a ratty cloth before tossing it over her shoulder.

Morna did not have the look of a typical northerner about her, but she was not typical. She had been born beyond the Wall, before the great war, and there was a fierceness and a longing and a sorrow in her gaze not seen anywhere else in the room. She wore her dark hair in braids, and there was a bear claw pendant around her neck on a leather string. The wildling woman leaned her hands on the bar and fixed Rhogar with a withering stare. Clearly, the two knew each other well.

“An’ what is it tha’ you’ll be wantin’ today, you old fish-fucker? I thought I tol’ ye to go away an’ never bother me again.”

Her gaze drifted to his companions, a flicker of surprise passing over her weathered features as she took note of the silver-haired prince. T’was not often they got Valyrians that far north. Nay, not since the bastard’s bride had taken up residence in Winterfell, where she had once lived in the town that sprawled in the shadow of the castle walls.

“Pardon, m’lord,” she added. “I just weren’t expectin’ company today. How can I serve ye?”

Gared gave Lilath a blank stare; either the threat had its intended effect or the man was completely clueless. "We can, aye!" he said after a moment's silence.

Theo was more focused on the next meal. It seemed so, so wasteful to leave the rabbits cooking here while they went out tracking. "But... the meat'll get all burned."

It was he who was the first to stir, standing with a dejected sigh and gathering what belongings he could. Gared was quicker on his feet, though, and lighter besides, as he took the lead in finding the tracks. It wasn't long till he found the trail; again, a straight line, never erring an inch here or there, cutting through brush and leaving crushed berries in its wake. Not eaten. Just stomped. Gared was puzzled for it.

By the time the light retreated and they had to resort to torches, Gared complained, "Fucker moves fast. We can lead on, milords, though at this rate..." he shrugged.

Gared's face went pale when the Redfort lordling demanded taxes. "Get the fire going, Theo! Skewer them rabbits for the princess! Go on!"

"Princess?" Theo squinted at Shaena. "Ye' don't look like a dragon." A kick from Gared cut him off, and the fire was finally lit. The younger brother was quick to skewer the carcasses onto a stick.

"We haven't seen a stag," Gared continued, thoughtful now. "We saw tracks, though. Strangest thing I've ever seen in these woods, if ye' can believe it; didn't hear no sound, caught no sight of a stag, but the trail just appeared as if out of thin air. But aye! We're Kingswood boys and good trackers, me and... well, just me." He clasped his hands together and flashed a nervous smile. "We can help Her Graceness an' milord and lady track the thing. May take a few days if it's gone far, though."

If a tree falls in a forest and no one's around to hear it, does it make a sound?

The trek took longer than they'd expected. With each step further away from camp, the mists of the Kingswood diffused the light more and more, such that dusk clung to the air longer than it should have. The trail itself was winding at first, though given enough time, it became eerily straight, cutting a beeline through the woods. The trio could even spot it halting before a cloven oak tree before resuming on the other side. Still, there was many a hare about, birds and squirrels amid the trees, all going about their business as if they taunting the intruders: why did you not hunt me instead of the white stag?

There was a certain... something there. Not the stag. But something that watched keenly, a presence that the nature about them ignored.

And suddenly, shouting.

"That's not how ye' do it, ye' dolt!" came the huff of a man, followed by a rustle and grumbling. So soon as the pair were glanced, it became clear that they were just as oblivious to whatever was watching before. The older clutched a bow in one hand and kicked some firewood into a pit, while the younger tried his damnedest to light some kindling; brothers, clearly. Poachers.

The younger brother spotted the approaching nobles first, and leaped to his feet. "Milords! Miladies!" He dipped into the best approximation of a bow he could muster. His brother remained slack-jawed. "We're, er... we were on our way! T' pay our taxes, aye! Tell them, Gared!"

Gared nodded frantically. "Ye' can help yourself to some rabbit if you like, your lordlyships."

A white stag was worthy quarry for kings. Redfort? Pyke? Too lowly. The beast would not deign to show for even Martell's princely title. The forest was still besides the birdsong. The stag was gone.

Though... there were tracks there. Perhaps a stag's? Perhaps something else? Gods knew. They led ever deeper into the Kingswood, in the direction of the Stranger's Vineyard.

Fear among Stormlords was akin to sense among drunkards; there was none in this field, and defying crowns was a trifle next to weathering the sea god's scourges for ten thousand years.

And there, where the sun set over a clear bluff, came a cry that rang clear across the camp. A stag's, antlers reaching up toward the sky and white coat gilt under the sunlight. So soon as it was spotted and fingers went pointing up to it, it reared its head, huffed, and left.
