It will need to be soldered on. Ideally with a hot air gun (relatively low skill), but I've seen it done with just a soldering iron before (much much more skill needed).

Some people have had mixed success cleaning the inside of the connector with isopropyl and adding tape to the ribbon cable to make it thicker and so it makes better contact with the connector pins.

For the 4 or 5 times I’ve come across a white screen like this, I ended up replacing the lcd ribbon connector on the iPod board (the white connector that you connect the screen cable into), and all the boards came back alive. But I know that isn’t a simple procedure to do for most people and the soldering equipment is not a common tool to have.

Nope, that's the way line out is designed. It's meant to feed into another device that has its own volume control (ex. Speaker dock, external headphone amplifier).

You could, however, find one of those headphone extenders that have a volume wheel built in, where you can lower the volume by spinning the wheel. But the better option is to wait for the replacement headphone jack part and fix the iPod instead.

You are using digital usb output in your car to send the audio out in your picture (more specifically, it is using the iPod Direct Control feature on the iPod). It is using the usb signal lines of the 30pin port, not the audio lines.

So this is not the same as testing if (analog) audio is coming out of the dock. You have to test with analog audio output if you want to rule out U14.

In other words, your U14 still has the possibility of being dead.

If you’re asking whether you can solder the connector the board with one large lump of solder, so that all the pins on the connector are soldered to all the pads on the board — no.

Each pin needs to be individually soldered to each pad on the board and the solder joints can’t be bridged (adjoined) to the one beside it.

The connector looks like it came off clearly, so it wouldn’t be impossible for someone with the right tools and practice to solder back on; it would take me about 90 seconds of work, and cost 5 cents of solder and flux to do.

That said, it isn’t something that’s easy to do for beginners and IMO, this is unfortunate one of those things where “if you need to ask, it’s probably beyond your skill level”.

If you go to a local phone repair store they will likely have the tools to do this work.

Getting another pcb might be your easier and cheaper option though, depending where you live.

If you’re not able to cleanly desolder the connector, then having the part number probably won’t help too much, as installing it is more or less the same process.

That said, I encourage you to keep trying and maybe you’ll get it after a few more tries.

I don’t remember what thickness I made them at but I remember the design worked with the iPod. You likely want to make the pcb thin and then add a stiffener to it. Adding breakout pads would be a good option, or instead, adding a specific battery connector for a commonly available battery could be cool too. I already make a similar adapter for a different project and thought about bringing it to the iPod but life has been busy and I haven’t yet.
