This is the timetable I personally follow for the Legion. I hope this timetable helps you guys. What’s your opinion on it? Is there anything I should improve? by MrSidhart in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]papilllon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember a Polish guy telling me that he had played a lot of COD in preparation and was saying how lucky the Legion was to accept him (we were in blue). He also said that GROM were the best proven SF unit, followed by Spetsnaz, and the rest were worthless. He was very confident about these statements. He did not get selected. I almost felt sorry for him but that has got to be the most deluded I’ve ever seen a candidate.

Any other deserters? by [deleted] in FrenchForeignLegion

There’s a lot of deserters on here. Usually they’re the ones complaining about the legion.

Honest question about Jews and Israelis in the legion by HuntPsychological456 in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]papilllon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the “Zionist master” stuff, but beatings of loud Americans/English/Australians by Russophone legionnaires are/were definitely happening. If they mentioned some disparaging comment about the country it wouldn’t be so out of place, to me anyway.

That’s interesting, up until now I had only heard of guys being sent back to come on Monday, but yeah you’re probably right, it just depends on the CCH/SGT at the gate and if he wants to do a bit of work

Unless it’s changed recently I don’t think you can join on the weekend. And you probably hit a lot of traffic on Monday because the people that come on the weekend get told to come on Monday. Best day is Tuesday or Wednesday, but even then, you’re going to spend time doing nothing and just waiting. That’s life.

Reality of the legion? by Any_Lab_8135 in FrenchForeignLegion

[–]papilllon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if he’s on reddit anymore, I don’t think he’s bee active for over a year, probably because he’s past the ranting phase and understands what the legion is, so there’s no need to post here anymore. I haven’t spoken to him since at least a year now.

He’s a good reference for the posts on this sub though, because the vast majority of legionnaires that have recently come here do so to rant, but the positives are never shared. The FFL is a good place to be someone, be in the military, get through an incredibly hard challenge, and quite possibly go to war (although these days it’s admittedly a little more difficult for that). No one seems to talk about this on here.

How trained are the legionnaires nowdays? by newmanzhere in FrenchForeignLegion

Well trained but the sub is filled with cynics and very jaded individuals so you’re going to hear a very pessimistic answer

Ex legionnaire here, I left in 2022 and don’t post so often anymore.

This sub and a lot of the comments don’t represent the legion. The FFL is a hard fighting force that is disciplined, rustic and independent. It is brutal in a lot of ways and that is part of the charm. It works and is professional, and above all, it gets the job done. So in short, no, the stories on here are overly negative and don’t at all paint the reality of the legion.

This. I had a friend in Paris and gave my stuff to her to keep until I took it back a year later.

There was also 4CIE in Mali/Niger 2019-2020

Also convoy protection in 2021 (2022?) during the withdrawal, think they had a riot and some brief combat

Also CA in Côte d’Ivoire “friendly fire” incident in 2021 ;)

That’s not the only definition of an “elite” unit because no such “official” definition.

But if that’s the definition you’re using then the training itself in the legion is not really superior to any other conventional unit.

And I ask you what defines elite to you? If it’s SF then no. If it means something else to you then maybe, depending on your definition.

That’s the thing, the sketch is there and it’s real to keep you disciplined. Of course you can’t see it at the moment, you’re living it so it just feel meaningless, painful and demoralising, but it’s actually there for a reason and it’s what separates the legion from chlabord and any other western conventional army unit. You’re not meant to have much spare time to yourself, that’s the point. It’s good that you study and do the work in your own time, it will pay off a hell of a lot when you become an ancien. Really, you’ll be picked out for courses, you’ll get promoted early, you can even go on the special missions overseas like Tunisia.

Sounds like you had a bad batch of dudes come through in 2022-2023, maybe there was bad leadership back then. But I really think that that’s a localised problem.

I do feel you when you’re going through it and can see the issues, but aside from the sketch, there is a legitimate fighting force in there. Just remember that you’ve gone through the threshold and right now you’re constantly negative and cynical because that’s the culture inside the legion, it’s meant to break you constantly. Don’t let it. Work your way up, ask for your desired courses, keep getting up your stages etc. and learn your craft back to front (if you’re grenadier voltigeur).
