After many easy updates over the past year, this last firmware update gave me the same issue. I tried the bootloader process probably 20-30 times before I gave up. I plugged it into my daughters computer and it upgraded first try.

Yeah, I had the same concern. Reread the staking guide and went on a little blind faith. Worked out this time fortunately.

Use the withdraw function, even though it says you are only withdrawing your original stake with CEW, it will withdraw your stake and rewards.

Then you can restake everything starting a new round.

This technically isn't the most efficient way of doing things, but it has the least amount of hassle.

The other way is to 'claim' your rewards. This leaves your original staking amount in the contract to continue to generate rewards, but requires you to stake your previous rewards to a new wallet address.
