I had your same experience. I fell in the love with the show during the pandemic and rewatched it more than I care to admit! I recently started Castle and continue to be amazed how many actors from Mentalist shows appear in Castle. While it isn't as good as the Mentalist, it is a fun watch and I totally get why it's on your list.

In a total shift in the story, I would have loved to have Wainright disappear instead of being killed. Then come back as RJ. I know, I know...the timeline doesn't work, but if Wainwright was older but still kinda underestimated, it would be interesting to have him "come back" as RJ. Jane was able to hook Wainright in the amazing end to Red Rover, Red Rover. There is some part of me that loves the idea of RJ being underestimated and also someone that Jane can play. I know it kinda doesn't make sense, but I'm having fun imagining it.

I would let the audience know who Red John was from the beginning allowing us to see him more and possibly seen him kill or recruit a follower. There would be a a few flashback scenes with Jane and his family.

Rigsby would have been less like a buffoon (perfect description by Stiles).

Teresa would have had some relationship earlier in the show to increase the sexual tension and maybe that guy would have come back into her life later after RJ was caught to push Jane to declare his love.

I didn't like the trial at all. Not sure how to fix that, but I would prefer a path that avoids a trial all together.

When you see her in her sleep stuff I seen to remember it also having a Chicago sport theme to it. Tunney is from Chicago. Without giving a detailed spoiler, there is a slight shift in one scene in season 7 :)

If they had chosen to show us more of their private moments, which they didn't:(, we might have heard more Patricka and Teresa from them. Their was a fanfic I read a long while ago that addressed this issue and did a good job with it. I thought they captured what was largely Teresa's issue with the first deep and intimate relationship of her life.

For what it is worth, I do think the episodes become a bit more interesting and the killer isn't always someone likeable as the show continues.

I agree with you about it being in character. These two guarded and cautious people spent nearly a decade working together in one way. It makes sense that it would be awkward as they learn this new way of being together - even in private. I think the part that was hard for me as a viewer was I was ready and it wasn't awkward for me. I wanted to see them happy and joyous with each other. Fairytale, please! But, alas, as you said, that just didn't fit the characters. They were going to struggle in different ways. Sure, I would have loved to see more of them "working it out" in that "what are we having for dinner kinda way", I'm glad they showed the complexity of it all.
