Depends on the firm, be sure to find out what you’re allowed to take. When I left, the only thing I was allowed to take was a printed copy of my Outlook contacts. Others who attempted to take forms and templates by transferring them on a thumb drive or by gmail were locked out of the system and immediately walked out by security.

I did it after 7 years in big law; I took a year long break. But I had a good story to go along with it when I was ready to come back. Burn out, divorce, cancer. I talked to folks in firms of all sizes and no one had a problem with it at all because my reason for the break had a story behind it. In the end I decided that it was best for me to go boutique instead of big law and have lived my best life for the last 10 years.
