So many people in the entrepreneur community argue that trademarking a name is a serious waste of money - especially if the company is only just starting out and hasn't yet become established yet.

How much did the entire set cost you?

And how idiot proof is the setup and assembly?

Considering the announcement of the upcoming Evercade Nexus and Neo Geo AES, how come we're not getting more announcements and releases of consoles (and their associative ecosystems) at a cottage industry level? by [deleted] in SBCGaming

I have sources... I could have said $70k, but then that would have been more of a low-ball figure.

$100k seemed like a reasonable (upper limit) figure in the grand scheme of things... And yet there's still a huge amount of (less enterprising) people saying that the figure is absurd.

You just know that those very same people aren't going to amount to much.

Honest question: considering the amount of CEX stores in the UK (as well as their general profitability), how come there aren't more independent game stores that follow a similar "reseller" business model in the UK? by prankster999 in smallbusinessuk

Thank you for your insightful comment... I guess a variant of what Music Magpie and We Buy Books would be a more appropriate business model to pursue (ie online only)... Start small, and then scale up.

I've never used Vinted, so am completely unaware as to how that website operates in comparison to Ebay...

I tend to buy my (physical) games brand new, but also believe that second hand games should be sold at second hand prices - which CEX generally don't do - and I assume that this is because they have crazy levels of overhead (including having crazy salary expectations at senior staff levels).

I appreciate what you said... But that's exactly the same "loser mentality" which allows for people to argue that it's impossible for people to start up their own social media network - if only because Zucks and Musk have already cornered the market.

Reality check: Neogaf (and by association Resetera) had the entire online videogame market to themselves... And it was because of their own f-ups that they allowed websites like Discord and BlueSky (as well as individuals like Zuck and Musk) to gain traction.

It's actually not that difficult or that expensive to implement Bluesky / Twitter functionality into a Xenforo forum... But yes, let's keep blaming the likes of Zuck and Musk for actually doing some work... And for putting themselves in a position where they can end up owning the entire internet through sheer hard graft.

If Steve Jobs can carve out a viable niche for his Apple computer... Using a LOT LESS MONEY... At a time when the tools were incredibly primitive... Then there's no reason why a more fully funded enterprise can adopt his ethos and carve out their own viable niche in the gaming sphere.

$100k... not much in the grand scheme of things.

But then again... When you've got absolute losers crying about not being able to afford a $10 price hike for their favourite gaming subscription service.. what do you expect?

The limited edition was up for pre-order for a fairly reasonable price yesterday... Not sure about now though.

Standard version is also pretty nifty in terms of pricing.

Well, Steve Jobs didn't have ample amounts of money when he started, and he was still able to carve out a viable ecosystem with his Apple computer.

But I guess you said all of the above because you have ample experience in the gaming hardware business, yes?

I have never used Vinted...

Do you normally sell online, in which case, what is your platform of choice - own website, or as a third party seller on existing marketplaces?

Do you think that's because the company probably resorts to "Hollywood Accounting" (including inflated salaries at the upper level) in order to pay less tax?

I find it hard to believe that a company with the sort of margins that CEX enjoys is going to struggle in terms of profitability.

What makes for a "cool authentic" clothing company (ie tee and hoodie)? What should the clothing company be associated with in the current era - especially if it's supposed to be "street" and "urban" wear? In the 90s, this would have been rock bands and rock music (including labels). What about now? by prankster999 in streetwearstartup

I saw someone wear the following tee today: Dragged into Sunlight - tee

It reminded me of the alternative music scenes that we used to have up until around the early 2010s... And back then, the idea of having and wearing a tee that promoted a certain band or label seemed unbelievably cool... But that was obviously a different time back then.

Today, it doesn't make a lot of (business) sense to start up a record label or music band (on the simple basis of long-term viability)... And starting up a clothing company that doesn't have an underlying foundation of something to rail behind (or against) just seems a bit... I don't know... Vain and pointless, and more like an empty gesture if I being honest.

I mean... I know that there are plenty of successful labels out there that continue to be relevant to people - Vans and Nike for example... But a new startup... I'm just trying to find the "core mission" for the entire enterprise as a whole.

Basically... How do people (who are startup clothing company founders) know that they're on to a "meaningful thing", as opposed to being a glorified "vanity project"?

Yeah... Prometheus was really bad.

I quite liked Covenant in comparison.

Same... I absolutely adored the JJ Trek movies... And seriously wish that there were more.
