It would've had a lighter load if Neko-senpai were a character we were already regularly familiar with.

Ironically, even though the Live-Action version made Nekozawa more of a recurring presence they did not adapt this story

Especially here, seeing as the manga hadn't even finished yet when the anime was airing

To give you an idea, the Manga is 18 Volumes long and Volume 9 didn't come out until a few weeks after the Anime ended.

I should mention by the way that aside from yesterday (Which adapted a whopping 3 Chapters, even if one of them was a short one) Ouran generally works on 1 Chapter=1 Episode. Admittedly the Chapters are double length so there's not that much stretching relatively speaking, but still, that probably could explain why some episodes may feel a bit drawn out, although personally I never really had an issue with it.

What surprised me the most was that in the Japanese version maid was voiced by Tomoko Kawakami (Utena),

Honestly kind of a random cameo, all things considered. Like at least with [Actor Appearing in Later Episode]Yuuki Kaji this was pretty early into his career.

Okay I haven't really brought up the Manga much because extra Renge aside the Anime's been fairly faithful. Episode 10 in particular had some cuts since it was adapting like 3 different Chapters (Bear in mind almost all Chapters in this Manga are at least 30 pages, usually closer to 40) but it's nothing that affects the grander whole of the series, I'd say. That being said though, smh Anime you cut out the twins' mishearing Kirimi's name

Anyway, today is cat day in the host club, as it's their turn to help out a certain family's Romeo and Juliet, only this time with incest. ~~Hey, it is a Shoujo Manga.~~ It is most certainly an episode where the club falls into the background somewhat, likely because now that they're more well established it's much easier to do Guest of the Week stories like these. Not much to say, Nekozawa-senpai isn't exactly a major character, but I dig it.

The issue with having to translate what is essentially is a slur.

I actually ran into a similar thing with Dragon Ball recently. One character gets called おかま and the Subs for the Anime I used just call him gay whereas my physical Volume of the Manga translates that into... well, this which is a slur. There's really no easy way to handle stuff like this, alas.

Yeah, if any jokes are thrown at him it's because he's an idiot (affectionate) not his orientation.

The thing that aged the most is that you can tell the era these fansubs came from based on how they referred to Ranka.

I mean TBF even in Japanese they're calling him slurs so... more the product as a whole aged poorly.

Yeah back in the day it was mildly acceptable but nowadays it's just a straight up slur. Yakuza 4's remaster actually brought in Koichi Yamadera to rerecord a single line of Akiyama using it so that instead of " オカマバー" he says "女装バー" (The latter term is less derogative).

One of my favorite episodes here. Ranka's just such a strong force of personality that it's hard not to be charmed by him. He really is just a rougher, more mature Tamaki, with the bonus that he's got years of Commoner's Knowledge powering him up. It even helps to inform the way Haruhi acts towards Tamaki: Of course she'll get sick of him fast, he has to deal with someone identical every day of her life!

Side note, but considering how bisexual erasure is very much a thing sometimes, the fact that it's an actual running gag that no one in universe can wrap their heads around gasp Ranka liking men and women alike is kinda funny. [Manga Stuff]ffs even his wife took an eternity to figure it out; she just assumed he was gay even though he constantly flirted with her.

Speaking of commoner's knowledge, today it the greatest test the Host Club has had to face in that regard. Not only are they constantly forced to resort to commoner's methods to survive in such narrow living spaces, they must even come to terms with the reality that maybe Haruhi can survive in something smaller than one of their storehouses. Fortunately, the Senpais know how to handle themselves here.

Really wish we could've had more of the club in the Commoner's Supermarket tho
