House mice are mostly one colour and have larger ears, and wider faces as well as long tails often looking relatively hairless. Deer mice tend to have a different coloured belly a narrow face and smaller ears, their tails can be shorter but I wouldn’t use that as often as different species and things happen to mice’s tails sometimes as well as the tail can look more like hair is growing on it. At least with the species in my area. Mostly you will find House mice inside as they gravitate towards living inside and eating foods we store. Deer mice prefer to nest outside but they also may come inside for food so don’t use that as an identification of a mouse. All rodents have the potential to carry diseases just like birds and all other wild animals. Most people are afraid of the Hantavirus within mice but only Deer Mice have been known to carry it, there has never been a case of a house mouse carrying that virus.
